This valve is located between the atrium (upper chamber) and the ventricle (lower pumping chamber) of the right side of the heart. The tricuspid valve has three cusps, or flaps, that control the direction and flow of blood. The two main types of tricuspid valve disease are: Anatomy of the Heart www.nucleusinc.com Rheumatic fever is the most common cause of tricuspid valve disease. Extractions: Feedback About statistics: This page presents a variety of statistics about Tricuspid valve diseases. The term 'prevalence' of Tricuspid valve diseases usually refers to the estimated population of people who are managing Tricuspid valve diseases at any given time. The term 'incidence' of Tricuspid valve diseases refers to the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new cases of Tricuspid valve diseases diagnosed each year. Hence, these two statistics types can differ: a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence, but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence. CMU Duran, JL Pomar, T Colman, A Figueroa, JM Revuelta and JL Ubago In an attempt to clarify the indications for tricuspid valve operations, we studied 150 patients who had preoperative and postoperative full catheterization including biventriculography. Seventy-eight patients had organic and 72 had functional tricuspid insufficiency (TI). One hundred nineteen underwent tricuspid repair (46 commissurotomies and 115 annulopasties), and in 31 the tricuspid disease was surgically ignored. Ninety seven percent of all patients with hemodynamically correct left-side repair were in Class I or II, regardless of the state of the tricuspid

Extractions: The tricuspid valve lies within the heart separating the right atrium and ventricle allowing forward blood flow and preventing backward flow through the right side of the heart. Tricuspid valve disease usually presents itself when the valve becomes incompetent and blood flows backward when it should be flowing forward to the lungs. This problem leads to failure of the right ventricle now working harder to maintain forward flow. Swelling of the legs and within the liver ensues. The most common cause of right ventricular failure and tricuspid valve insufficiency is left-sided or left ventricular failure leading to a backup of pressure through the lungs to the right side of the heart. Repairing the tricuspid valve in these situations can be very beneficial for patients.

Extractions: Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute's surgeons are highly skilled in the surgical repair of the tricuspid valve. In the past, surgery to correct tricuspid valve disease was rarely performed. With improved technologies and skillful surgeons, tricuspid valve repair is becoming more commonplace. This repair may be recommended for primary tricuspid disease to treat valvular leakage (regurgitation), or as a combined procedure with other heart surgery such as coronary artery bypass or valve surgery Tricuspid regurgitation is a disorder involving backflow of blood...

Extractions: What is tricuspid valve dysplasia? The atrioventricular (AV) valves in the heart ensure that the blood flows from the atria to the ventricles when the heart beats. Malformation (dysplasia) of the right atrioventricular (tricuspid) valve causes backflow of blood into the right atrium, or tricuspid regurgitation. There may also be narrowing (stenosis) of the valve. Due to the dysplastic valve, the heart works less efficiently. How is tricuspid dysplasia inherited? The mode of inheritance is undefined. What breeds are affected by tricuspid dysplasia This is mostly seen in larger breeds, especially the borzoi, boxer, German shepherd, Great Dane, Great Pyrenees, Irish setter, Labrador retriever, Newfoundland, old English sheepdog, and Weimaraner. Tricuspid dysplasia is more common in males than females. For many breeds and many disorders, the studies to determine the mode of inheritance or the frequency in the breed have not been carried out, or are inconclusive. We have listed breeds for which there is a general consensus among those investigating in this field and among veterinary practitioners, that the condition is significant in this breed. What does tricuspid dysplasia Often animals will live for several years without developing heart disease. More severely affected animals with a greater degree of regurgitation and/or stenosis across the defective valve, will develop right-sided heart failure. Signs may include cool limbs and a distended abdomen due to an enlarged liver or build-up of fluid. Your dog may also have a reduced tolerance for exercise and may experience fainting or collapse due to an abnormal heart rhythm.
