Craniofacial Center | Dallas, Texas scaphocephaly involves fusion of the sagittal suture. Almost all children affected with scaphocephaly require surgical treatment. http://www.thecraniofacialcenter.org/synostoses_scaphocephaly.html
Extractions: Scaphocephaly involves fusion of the sagittal suture. This sutures runs from front to back starting at the fontanel, at the top of the head, and extends backwards along the middle of the skull to the back of the head. Often the fontanel, or soft spot, is absent or closed. A ridge can be seen, or felt running along the top of the head, in between the right and left half of the skull. When viewed from above, the skull is wider near the forehead and gets narrower towards the back of the skull (which is the opposite of what is normal: that is, the back of the skull is wider than the front). When looking straight on at the child's face, the forehead seems quite big, or prominent, and the sides of the skull look narrow. The incidence of scaphocephaly is one in 2,000 births. It is the most common form of craniosynostosis. In general, a single operation is all that is necessary to treat this condition. A small percentage of children (roughly 2%) end up undergoing a second smaller operation, later in life to correct residual deformities. It is unclear whether or not this is due to an inadequate initial correction, an inherent growth disturbance (the bones are not growing normally afterwards), or a combination of the two.

Extractions: 800 Woodbury Road Woodbury, New York 11797 Tel: 516-921-2244 Scaphocephaly Home Procedures Information Hair Removal ... Reconstructive Scaphocephlay results from the premature closure of the sagittal suture. The sagittal suture, runs from front to back and in the anterior portion merges with the "soft-spot" of the child's skull. The appearance of a child with Scaphocephaly is such that the head is elongated from front to back and narrowed from side to side. Frequently the skull of these children does not expand at the same rate as the brain, and as such children with Scaphocephaly are prone to neurological disorders. Surgery to correct sagittal suture synostosis, is ideally performed between the ages of 3-12 months by a team of Craniofacial surgeons. Dr. Elliot Duboys, MD, Clinical Associate Professor is Co-Director of the Cleft and Craniofacial Team at University Medical Center, Stony Brook, New York and works in close conjunction with Dr. Michael Egnor, Associate Professor, Pediatric Neurosurgery. The surgery results in a shorter and wider shaped skull.
