It's similar to hay fever - the allergen causes inflammation and irritation in delicate linings in the nose and eyes. What are the causes? What are the symptoms? What is the treatment? What can be done to prevent allergic rhinitis? Sixteen per cent of the population suffer with allergic rhinitis - of these, eight per cent have perennial symptoms, six per cent perennial and seasonal symptoms and two per cent have seasonal symptoms alone (according to the British Medical Journal, 1998). As with asthma and eczema, the incidence of allergic rhinitis is increasing and it runs in families. Perennial allergic rhinitis starts in early childhood and occurs all year round. IgE antibodies are attached to mast cells near mucosal surfaces. When the individual comes into contact with airborne allergens, the mast cells release chemical mediators histamine, leukotrienes, kinins, and prostaglandins. These substances cause the reactions that lead to the allergic symptoms. The initial response is followed by a late chronic inflammatory phase characterized by proliferation of mast cells, and invasion of the mucosa by eosinophiles, basophiles, and the proliferation of lymphocytes. This inflammatory response causes the increased sensitivity to non-specific stimuli like smoke, strong odors, and insecticides. Allergic rhinitis affects about 10-20% of the pediatric population and may be seasonal (pollens and grasses) or perennial (animals, dust mites,cockroaches). It affects between 10-20% of all people in the United States, and is responsible for 2.5% of all doctor visits. Antihistamines and other drugs used to treat allergic rhinitis make up a significant fraction of both prescription and over-the-counter drug sales each year. There are two types of allergic rhinitis: seasonal and perennial. Seasonal AR occurs in the spring, summer, and early fall, when airborne plant pollens are at their highest levels. In fact, the term hay fever is really a misnomer, since allergy to grass pollen is only one cause of symptoms for most people. Perennial AR occurs all year and is usually caused by home or workplace airborne pollutants. A person can be affected by one or both types.
