Extractions: Reiters Syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by arthritis, inflammation of the urinary tract (nongonococcal urethritis), inflammation of the mucous membranes that line the eyes ( conjunctivitis ), and inflammation of the front part of the eye ( iritis, uveitis ).). Painful and swollen joints occur because of an underlying infection (reactive arthritis). Sores (lesions) may also occur on the skin and the mucous membranes of the mouth. In many cases, Reiters Syndrome is transmitted through sexual contact (venereal). However occasionally there is an underlying infection of the small bowel (enteric) which may contribute to the onset of Reiters Syndrome. All the symptoms of the disease may not appear at once, and they may also disappear and then recur. The symptoms subside spontaneously within the first year in the majority of individuals. Symptoms Urinary urgency, burning or stinging

Organizations Reiters syndrome is an inflammatory reaction to an infection somewhere in the body. It usually follows a urogenital or intestinal infection. Symptoms of the disorder primarily involve three body systems: Reiter's syndrome is triggered by certain infections in a genetically susceptible person. The infection often starts in the urinary or genital tract, and is usually caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Chlamydia is passed between people through sexual activity. The infection can also begin in the digestive system. In these cases, the infection occurs after eating food tainted with bacteria, usually Shigella, Salmonella, Yersinia, or Campylobacter. About one to four weeks after the infection, a susceptible person may develop Reiters syndrome. Doctors do not know why some people develop the disease and others do not. But most patients with the condition carry a specific genetic factor called HLA-B27 (or the B27 gene). A risk factor is something that increases your chances of getting a disease or condition. Risk factors for Reiter's syndrome include:

An infectious cause is suspected, as the disease often follows an infection of the bowel or lower genitourinary tract. Men are affected much more commonly than women, who tend to develop the disease after intestinal disorders, including bacillary dysentery, amoebic dysentery and shigellosis. The characteristic skin lesion, termed keratoderma blenorrhagicum, affects the palms and soles most frequently. Superficial erythematous ulcerations may also be evident on the buccal mucosa and the tongue. The serum histocompatibility antigen HLA-B27 may be present in as many as 75% of patients. Involvement of the lower extremity usually becomes evident initially in the knee and the ankle, followed in descending order of frequency by the metatarsophalangeal joints, the heel, the shoulder, the wrist, the hip and the lumbar spine. Heel pain and tenderness are sometimes initial manifestations of Reiter's syndrome. The arthritic attacks of in this disease are usually self-limiting and of short duration; recurrences are frequent, however. On radiographs the features of joint involvement in Reiter's syndrome are similar to those in the other seronegative spondyloarthropathies and differ from the findings of

Reiter's syndrome is also called "reactive arthritis". It is considered to involve an immune system which is "reacting" to the presence of bacterial infections in the genital, urinary or gastrointestinal systems. For a general description, see Reiters syndrome Reiter's syndrome most frequently occurs in patients in their 30s or 40s, but it can occur at any age. The form of Reiter's syndrome that occurs after genital infection (venereal) occurs more frequently in males. The most common bacterium that has been associated with this post-venereal form of Reiter's syndrome is Chlamydia . Typically, the arthritis develops one to three weeks after the onset of the bacterial infection.
