Clinical Trial: Antibody Production In Immune Disorders Official Title Evaluation of Immune Responses to Vaccines in Primary to vaccines in subjects with known or suspected primary immune disorders. http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct/gui/show/NCT00023504
Extractions: Verified by National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) August 29, 2005 Sponsored by: National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) Information provided by: National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: Purpose This study will evaluate immune function in people with a known or suspected immune disorder. It will determine participants' immune response to vaccines by measuring blood antibody levels after vaccination. Patients enrolled in a NIH protocol involving immune reconstitution (bone marrow transplantation or gene therapy) for a known or suspected primary immune disorder may be eligible for this study. Participants may be asked to have more than one vaccine, based on their age, use of IVIG, past immunization history and underlying immune problem. The possible vaccinations include: The diphtheria, tetanus, pneumococcus and rabies vaccines are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and used routinely to protect against disease. Study participants will have a blood sample drawn before vaccination. The number of additional samples collected will vary according to the vaccines administered; 1 for rabies; 1 for tetanus; and 1 to 2 for the pneumococcal vaccines. Each sample will be up to 5 teaspoonfuls. Participation in the study may last up to a year, depending on the blood sampling scheduling

Extractions: There are over 70 primary immune disorders, ranging widely in severity. Defect in the immune system is inherited (carried through the genes) and is called primary or inherited immune deficiency. Primary immune deficiency diseases affect immune system, making the person more susceptible to infections. Primary immune deficiency often presents itself in the form of ordinary infections. Physicians sometimes treat the infections while missing the underlying cause, allowing the illnesses to recur, and leaving the patient vulnerable to permanent damage to vital organs, physical disability, and even death. Quick diagnosis and treatment of primary immune deficiency disease is essential to preventing infections from doing permanent damage. Lack of unique symptoms causes Primary Immune Deficiency diseases to resemble a great number of other illnesses. Thus, families and doctors are often unaware that the conditions they are dealing with are actually rooted in a defect of the immune system.
