Body And Soul: Panic panic. Maybe it s wishful thinking, but while reading today s New York Timesarticle on Listed below are links to weblogs that reference panic http://bodyandsoul.typepad.com/blog/2005/03/panic.html
Extractions: Please donate now. Main Maybe it's wishful thinking, but while reading today's New York Times article on extraordinary rendition, I thought I sensed a hint of panic. The sources are frustratingly vague "current and former government officials" but the story, if true, is explosive: Within days of September 11, Bush signed a directive authorizing the CIA to fly prisoners to other countries for "interrogation." Since the most notable charactistic of the penal systems in the chosen countries is the skill, imagination, and enthusiam with which they practice torture, and since the officials cited go to great pains to emphasize that we made really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really sure that the torturers would be good this time, and since there is no point to sending a prisoner to a country that practices torture unless you want him tortured, I think it's safe to assume that "interrogation" is something of a euphemism. There is something desperate in a person tryng to tell you that they sent prisoners to countries where they would be tortured because it was cheaper than keeping them here:

What do all of these situations have in common? For most of us these seemingly different situations produce similar reactions: the heart pounds, palms sweat, muscles tighten, and the senses go on full alert. We feel apprehensive, uneasy, and even dizzy. In a word, we experience ANXIETY. "Normal" anxiety helps us flee from danger or conquer stressful situations. It is perfectly natural and beneficial; however, severe, recurring anxiety can impair performance and interfere with decision making. Take C.J.'s case for instance... C.J., a 21-year-old female student, made numerous visits to the Student Health Center over several months, complaining of episodes of severe chest discomfort, heart palpitations, extreme fear, and tremulousness, each lasting 20 to 30 minutes. C.J. showed great concern for these episodes, expressing a fear that something was seriously wrong with her heart. She described them as "the most terrifying experiences of my life" and was beginning to avoid placing herself in situations where friends or medical help were not readily available to her.

Extractions: Panic disorder, also know as anxiety disorder, usually consists of brief episodes of intense fear and may occur with multiple physical symptoms. Sometimes they can happen repeatedly and unexpectedly in the absence of an external threat. These panic or anxiety attacks are believed to occur when the brain's normal mechanism for reacting to a threat is aroused. Often with panic disorder people also feel anxious and worry about having another panic attack. They may avoid situations in which they think that an attack is likely to occur. Anxiety about another attack, and the avoidance it causes, can lead to disability in panic disorder. In the United States, 1.6 percent of the adult population, or more than three million people, will have panic or anxiety disorder at some point in their lives. The disorder typically begins in young adulthood, but older people and children can also be affected. Women are affected twice as often as men. While people of all races and social classes can have panic disorder, there appear to be cultural differences in how individual symptoms are expressed.

Extractions: Panic Disorder P anic disorder is characterized by unexpected and repeated episodes of intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms that may include chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, or abdominal distress. These sensations often mimic symptoms of a heart attack or other life-threatening medical conditions. As a result, the diagnosis of panic disorder is frequently not made until extensive and costly medical procedures fail to provide a correct diagnosis or relief. Many people with panic disorder develop intense anxiety between episodes, worrying when and where the next one will strike. Fortunately, through research supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), effective treatments have been developed to help people with panic disorder. How Common Is Panic Disorder? In a given year 1.7% of the U.S. population (2.4 million Americans) experiences panic disorder.
