    Extractions: Summary and Comment Managing syphilis in patients with HIV remains controversial. These two reports highlight the difficulties of diagnosing and monitoring a response to therapy for patients co-infected with HIV and syphilis. Gordon, et al. report the outcome of 11 patients with neurosyphilis (defined by reactivity in serum treponemal tests, a reactive cerebrospinal fluid VDRL, and the presence of neurologic symptoms). The patients were treated with conventional doses of intravenous penicillin G (18 to 24 million units per day) for ten days. Five patients had prior therapy for syphilis that apparently failed to prevent the development of neurosyphilis. Six weeks after therapy, serum RPR titers fell by two or more dilutions in four patients, and CSF VDRL decreased by two or more dilutions in seven patients. By 24 weeks, serum RPR fell in four of seven evaluable patients and CFS VDRL decreased or was nonreactive in four patients. Two patients had no improvement in serum or CSF titers or in cerebrospinal fluid profiles.

VIII, VII und III), Polyradikulitis und selten vaskuläre Hirnstammsyndrome möglich. Während der Spätlatenz (>1 Jahr nach Infektion) werden die „asymptomatische“ Neurosyphilis (entzündlicher Liquor ohne klinisches Korrelat) wie auch die unklassifizierbare Neurosyphilis beobachtet. Letztere bietet eine vielfältige, aber nur gering ausgeprägte Symptomatik bei entzündlichem Liquorbefund.
