Ask an Attorney Myositis includes a variety of muscular diseases that cause degeneration of muscle tissue. As myositis progresses, muscle fibers throughout the body are destroyed, resulting in decreasing strength, and making even the simplest physical activities difficult. Although the disorder generally only affects muscles, myositis can also harm the heart (which is actually a muscle), lungs skin and intestines. Sometimes, muscle deterioration may occur only in one part of the body such as an arm or leg. If you experience muscle tenderness or weakness, ask your doctor about undergoing a blood test known as creatine kinase (CK) or creatine phosphokinase (CPK). These tests can help determine whether you are suffering from myositis.

Livia Casciola-Rosen, Kanneboyina Nagaraju, Paul Plotz, Stuart Levine, Andrea Corse, Antony Rosen Purpose: Because there are distinct clinical phenotypes in systemic autoimmune diseases such as idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM), yet ubiquitous expression of autoantigens, the authors sought to better define the mechanisms underlying the striking association of targets of the immune response with disease phenotype. Perhaps better understanding of these targets can lead to elucidation of relevant pathogenic and therapeutic pathways. Methods: Autoantigen expression and markers of muscle cell regeneration were analyzed by immunoblotting and immunocytochemistry in muscle biopsies from controls (n=8) or patients with autoimmune myositis (n=15). Autoantigen expression was also evaluated as a function of differentiation of myoblasts into myotubes

Miller, for the International Myositis Assessment and Clinic Studies (IMACS) Group Objective: Recently, a core set of outcome measures for adult myositis has been developed. The authors, therefore, sought to develop a responder index, which combines the core measures for use in clinical trials. Specifically, they wanted to determine a preliminary definition of improvement (DOI). Methods: Experts in the field of adult myositis rated 113 paper patient profiles, based on data from 4 NIH clinical trials, as "clinically improved" or "not improved." Nominal group technique was used to reach consensus - defined here as 70% or greater agreement. Consensus was achieved in 102 of the 113 cases. The six core set measures of disease status used were: Physician Global activity; Patient Global Activity; Muscle Strength; Physical Function; Muscle Enzymes, and Extra-muscular Activity. These consensus patient profiles were next used to test the DOIs for sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and rate of false positives and false negatives. Thirteen candidate DOI's that had greater than or equal to 80% sensitivity and specificity in the adult paper patient profile dataset were presented to a working group of 15 myositis experts then ranked their top choices for validity and ease of use.

No one knows what triggers the immune systems attack. Persistent inflammation progressively weakens the muscles. Myositis can take several forms, usually develops slowly over time and can range in severity from mild to debilitating or worse. Both children and adults can get it.

It was recognised as a disease in its own right in the 1960s. It usually occurs in middle to late life and is more common in men than women. We donât know how many people in the UK are affected but it is the most common muscle disease diagnosed after the age of 50. Nevertheless, it is sufficiently rare that most general practitioners will not have looked after patients with inclusion body myositis before, and many doctors will not have heard of the condition.

FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Definition: Myositis ossificans is an unusual condition that often occurs in athletes who sustain a blunt injury that causes deep tissue bleeding. A typical story is a soccer player who is kicked forcefully in the mid-thigh, and develops pain and significant bruising. The soft-tissues that were injured in the traumatic event initially develops a hematoma, and subsequently develop the myositis ossificans. The word myositis ossificans means that bone forms within the muscle, and this occurs at the site of the hematoma. No one knows exactly why this occurs in some people.

Extractions: Health education or patient education is important aspect of disease management program. Even some programs, especially some chronic disease management can go further and introduced self-management for some aspect of illness. Good example is management of arthritis. There are a variety of models for both formal and informal self-management. However, the core concepts involve engagement in self-care, improved self-monitoring, interactions with healthcare professionals and coping with disease. Self-management programs are mostly provided to people with chronic diseases like arthritis, diabetes, and some skin diseases. Patient education and self-management programs are aim to improve the efficiency and quality of the healthcare process and overall improve quality of life. It is not really about reduction in doctor visits or clinic attendances. Even sometime, an improved healthcare process can include more frequent use of services because of improved compliance. Extractions: WHAT IS MYOSITIS? Myositis is the term for illnesses that involve muscle inflammation ("myo" means muscle and "itis" means inflammation). All forms of myositis involve persistent, muscle inflammation. This muscle inflammation almost always results in weakness, and less often in heat, swelling, and pain of the muscles. Rarely, myositis can occur in a single part of the body, such as one arm or one leg. SYMPTOMS The major symptom of myositis is muscle weakness. Hip and shoulder muscles are most likely to be involved. This often results in difficulty combing hair; putting on heavy clothes; getting out of a bathtub, bed, chair, or car; and climbing stairs. Other muscles sometimes affected are those in the front of the neck, making it difficult to raise your head when lying down. Occasionally, other neck and throat muscles are affected, making it hard for some people to swallow, sing, or even speak clearly. If your chest muscles or lungs are affected, you may have trouble breathing. For many breeds and many disorders, the studies to determine the mode of inheritance or the frequency in the breed have not been carried out, or are inconclusive. We have listed breeds for which there is a consensus among those investigating in this field and among veterinary practitioners, that the condition is significant in this breed. What does masticatory muscle myositis Many dogs affected with masticatory muscle myositis will improve with drug therapy. How is masticatory muscle myositis diagnosed? Your veterinarian will suspect this disease if your dog has painful, swollen masticatory muscles, with pain on opening the jaw. The diagnosis can be confirmed with a muscle biopsy to examine the cells with a microscope. Special techniques may be used to test for specific antibodies. How is masticatory muscle myositis treated?
