Extractions: The Comfort Zone - April 15, 1998 MRKH Madness, by Niki Taylor Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is a fairly rare syndrome that affects about 1 in 10,000 women. This syndrome can cause a variety of medical problems including reproductive, skeletal, and renal (kidney) problems. The reproductive problems may include a short or absent vagina, a partial or absent uterus, and infertility. The patient with MRKH has amenorrhea or absence of periods. Even if a patient has a partial uterus, it is usually removed due to stomach pains and the inability of menstruation to leave the body. Normally, the ovaries are fine. Keep in mind that the patient is genetically a female with breasts and feminine body hair. As for the skeletal problems, vertebrae malformations may be present. Other bone malformations may be in the limbs. Renal (kidney) problems are very common. A kidney may be missing or in the wrong place. Another problem MRKH women may experience is hearing loss. Except for the reproductive problems, MRKH women may have all, some or none of these symptoms. Treatments are possible for the reproductive problems. Doctors can form a new vagina through surgery. Another way to create a longer vagina is the use of dilators. These are phallus-shaped instruments that the patient inserts into the vaginal area over periods of time. These procedures take a great deal of patience, but according to many patients, they're worth it. Many patients report satisfactory sexual intercourse after these treatments.

Extractions: Main Index Sign In About MRKH About This Site ... Links The earliest references to vaginal agenesis and proposed therapy can be found in Hippocrates' work on "The Nature of Women". Other references can also be found in the Roman and Greek eras. The first contemporary description was in 1781. The description of congenital absence of the vagina with incompletely developed uterine remnants or a completely absent uterus as a specific syndrome can be traced to the work of 4 individuals. They were Mayer (1829), Rokitansky (1838), Kuster (1910) and Hauser (1961-1973). MRKH is the second most common cause of a lack of periods in adolescent girls. The incidence is reported as 1:5,000 female births. Most patients present as adolescents with primary amenorrhoea (no periods) in the presence of normal secondary sexual characteristics (breasts and body hair and female genitalia). The cause of MRKH is difficult to establish but there is a genetic etiology, which is also not by simple inheritance. It has been described as a polygenic multifactorial inheritance. The risks of recurrence in one family with this type of inheritance, is between 1-2%. Sisters with the same condition have occurred. However, we are not aware of any relationship to diet, work, environment, chemical exposure, drugs, radiation or infections.

Extractions: MRKH syndrome Mayer Rokitansky Kuster Hauser Syndrome is a condition that affects approximately 1 in 5000 women. Learn more about it by reading this article. We've heard of heart malformations and limb deformities but genital malformations? This is part of Mayer Rokitanksy Kuster Hauser Syndrome(MRKH) which includes a short or nonexistent vagina, no cervix, and a partial or absent uterus. The causes are unknown. Most women find about this when they are teenagers. Some girls may find out at a young age when they have surgeries for some other problems such as hernias. Yet the majority find out when their periods won't come. They despair because sisters got their periods at earlier ages. They think they're "late bloomers". A visit to the obstetrician-gynecologist will be futile when the doctors are unable to do pelvic exams on them because of their short or nonexistent vaginas. Instead doctors use laparoscopic surgery where they insert a light through the navel or they use ultrasound to make a diagnosis. This way, the doctors are able to ascertain the condition of the reproductive organs. Doctors should find normal ovaries and fallopian tubes. However, they should find no uterus or an incomplete one. An incomplete one is usually removed because it may cause cramps. Once the doctors find these problems, the question changes from why haven't I gotten a period to how can a doctor "cure" it? A doctor can't cure the 'no periods' part because the women don't have uteruses.
