For disease clinically confined to the primary site, the greater the thickness and depth of local invasion of the melanoma, the higher the chance of lymph node or systemic metastases and the worse the prognosis. Melanoma can spread by local extension (through lymphatics) and/or by hematogenous routes to distant sites. Any organ may be involved by metastases, but lungs and liver are common sites. The risk of relapse decreases substantially over time, although late relapses are not uncommon. [

Melanocytes are found throughout the lower part of the epidermis . They produce melanin , the pigment that gives skin its natural color. When skin is exposed to the sun, melanocytes produce more pigment, causing the skin to tan, or darken. organ . It protects against heat, sunlight, injury, and infection . The skin has 2 main layers: the epidermis (upper or outer layer) and the dermis (lower or inner layer). When melanoma starts in the skin, the disease is called cutaneous melanoma. This PDQ summary is about cutaneous (skin) melanoma. Melanoma may also occur in the eye and is called intraocular or ocular melanoma. The location of the 'incident' was between my neck and right shoulder. Last week, my gp removed a patch of skin down to the fascia with a minimum margin of one cm (the scar is almost two inches long). The skin patch was sent back to the lab and this time they identified a 1.5 mm deep melanoma

Extractions: Choroidal melanoma is a primary cancer of the eye. It arises from the pigmented cells of the choroid of the eye and is not a tumor that started somewhere else and spread to the eye. Malignant means that the tumor is a cancer which may metastasize, that is, spread to other parts of the body. Although some choroidal melanomas are more life-threatening than others, almost all should be treated as if they were malignant. Choroidal melanoma is diagnosed during an examination of the eye by an ophthalmologist. Your eye doctors are able to recognize a choroidal melanoma by the degree of pigmentation of the tumor, by its shape and location, and by other features observed in an eye examination. Unlike tumors in other parts of the body, choroidal melanoma is directly visible through the "window" provided by the pupil. Most of the time, the ophthalmologist can be nearly certain of the diagnosis from clinical appearance, photographs, and ultrasound pictures. Therefore, biopsy, which is often indicated to diagnose tumors in other parts of the body, is avoided. Are there any tests which help in the diagnosis of choroidal melanoma?

Dooley, M.D., who would eventually become internationally recognized for his medical work in Southeast Asia during the 1950s, was born in 1927 into an American Roman Catholic family. Surprisingly, Dooley proved to be an irresponsible student who graduated near the bottom of his class at the St. Louis University Medical School. He was even forced to repeat his senior year of studies. His internship was prolonged by half a year due to his being deemed to immature to continue on to his residency. In April of 1953, due to his political connections, Dooley was able to join the Navy Medical College with the rank of lieutenant. With this not-so-promising scenario set, Dooley would soon be internationally recognized for his work. In the spring of 1954, the French had been defeated in Vietnam at the battle of Dien Bien Phu. Through Operation Passage to Freedom, those who wished to transfer from the north to the south (or vice versa) would be able to do so until May of 1955. Sent on board the USS Montague to help serve as a French translator for the United States, Dooley recognized an opportunity to regain respect for his name. Sending letters to the United States press, he would sensationalize the situation and his work. His reputation, in the end, was actually furthered due to the political standards of the time and America's strong anti-communist outlook.

Extractions: Melanoma June, 2001 WHAT IS MELANOMA? Melanoma is the most lethal skin cancer, although it can be cured easily if caught early enough. It is named for the skin cells from which it arises, called the melanocytes . These skin cells produce a brown-black skin pigment called melanin , which helps to protect against the damaging rays of the sun and to determine skin coloring. As a person ages, melanocytes often proliferate, forming concentrated clusters that appear on the surface as small, dark, flat or dome-shaped spots, which are usually harmless moles or liver spots. When cell proliferation occurs in a controlled and contained manner, the resulting lesion is benign and is commonly referred to as a mole or nevus . Most adults have at least several dozen benign moles. Sometimes, however, pigment cells grow out of control and become malignant and life-threatening melanoma. Early detection of melanoma is critical because of the skin's unique anatomy: The outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis , is only about 20 cells deep, roughly as thick as a sheet of paper.
