Extractions: Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) Updated 2/22/05 Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) is one variety of a group of diseases known as "Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies" (TSEs). TSEs cause microscopic holes in the brain, giving it a sponge-like appearance under a microscope. TSEs are always fatal and affect both humans and animals. BSE is the type of TSE that occurs in cattle. Scientists believe cattle are infected when they eat feed that contains remnants of infected animals. The most common human TSE is Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Scientists believe a new variant form of CJD is caused by consuming the brain and spinal cord of animals infected with BSE. On December 23, 2003 a cow was diagnosed with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in Washington State. The cow was traced to its origin in Canada. A total of 255 animals that were or could have been from the source herd in Alberta, Canada were identified on 10 premises in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. All 255 animals tested negative for BSE. After this extensive testing and trace back of feed cohorts, USDA officially closed its investigation into the BSE incident in Washington State on Feb. 9 2004

Yes. BSE stands for bovine spongiform encephalopathy, and it is widely referred to as "mad cow disease." It is a chronic degenerative disease that affects the central nervous system of cattle. BSE is named because of the spongy appearance of the brain tissue of infected cattle examined under a microscope. BSE belongs to a family of diseases known as the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). TSE animal diseases found in the United States include scrapie in sheep and goats, chronic wasting disease in deer and elk, transmissible spongiform encephalopathy in mink, feline spongiform encephalopathy in cats, and in humans: kuru, both classic and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker syndrome, and fatal familial insomnia. (Note: The one case of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in the United States is in a young woman who likely contracted the disease while living in the United Kingdom. Symptoms appeared after she moved to the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not found additional cases in the United States through its surveillance program.)

Can it be a coincidence that, in the last 10 years, we've eaten 1.5 million BSE-infected animals? On Friday morning at 11 o'clock, 20-year-old Peter Hall was buried at Chester-le-Street Parish Church cemetery, near Sunderland, Co Durham. He was killed by Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (CJD), the human equivalent of Mad Cow Disease (BSE). First striking him at 19, just 13 months ago, it made Peter Hall the fourth British teenager to succumb to the disease to date. Two others died last year-Stephen Churchill, at 19, and an un-named 17-year-old girl. The very first teenage CJD victim, Victoria Rimmer, 16 when she was diagnosed by live biopsy late in 1994, is still in a coma. Government scientists argue that the recent increase in surveillance is the most likely reason why more cases, including teenage cases, are now being identified. But Britain's leading CJD specialist, Dr John Collinge, at St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington, disagrees. 'Given the rarity of CJD in teenagers,' he says, 'It is unlikely that such cases would have been previously missed.' In other words, we're faced with something new. The Government still insists that there is no evidence to link BSE and CJD. Most recently, Health Secretary Stephen Dorrell said that 'there was no conceivable risk' in eating beef. But the facts tell a different story.

Two cases of the disease, more properly known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, have been found in cattle in Italy. In November 2000, Germany and Spain reported discovering their own native cases of BSE. BSE has not yet been found in the USA, although scrapie (found in sheep) and chronic wasting disease (found in deer and elk), two related diseases, have been found on U.S. soil. Dr. M. Kubo, NIAH, Japan. BSE is thought to be passed from animal to animal through consumption of nervous system tissues from infected animals. These tissues have been included in 'meat and bone meal' in the past, which many farmers have used as protein supplements for their livestock, thus spreading the disease. Many scientists believe that BSE is linked to a human brain disease, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD). According to the World Health Organization, vCJD is "strongly linked to exposure, probably through food, to BSE." Worldwide, over 80 people are known to have died from vCJD. In addition to food products, there is concern over some vaccines made with animal products. Although an FDA advisory committee found the risk of transmission of BSE through vaccines to be 'theoretical and remote,' the committee recommended that vaccines produced with bovine-related materials from countries known to have BSE be replaced with ones from BSE-free countries.

Science Friday Archives May Hour Two: Mad Cow Disease and CJD A study released last week in the U.K. failed to find evidence that tainted beef from the "mad cow disease" epidemic of 1996 has caused widespread illness in people. After studying samples taken from over 3000 people, the researchers found no signs of new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (nvCJD), which is strongly believed to be related to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (commonly called mad cow disease or BSE.) They reported early results of their work in the medical journal The Lancet. Changes to a small portion of this protein may change it from a normal protein to an infectious prion. Biology and Biophysics, Swiss Federal Inst. of Technology) Another paper recently released in the Annals of Neurolog y, however, paints a gruesome picture of the progression of nvCJD. There is no treatment for nvCJD doctors can simply try to make the patient comfortable. Tracking 35 patients over a period that averaged 14 months, the research team watched as the patients progressed from psychiatric symptoms such as depression to neurologic symptoms, such as coordination problems and involuntary movements. Some felt numbness or painful sensations in their skin and limbs. As the patients neared death, they gradually slipped into helplessness, losing the ability to move or speak.

What would be expected would be an immediate fall in beef sales but with a long, slow return of the sales over the following year. The levels may not return to where they were ever again and beef may well become a much less desired meat than the farmers are hoping. This can be predicted because of the way in which beef sales fell following the cases of vCJD in UK and the cases of BSE appearing in Europe as a whole. The way in which the American media have pointed the BSE finger at Europe in the past and suggested that eating beef in Europe was a risk must make it difficult to claim that US BSE is in some way safer. Exactly that took place in Japan where, when BSE appeared, the beef sales crashed.
