It starts with a typically small lesion that looks like a mosquito bite. This is followed about 10-14 days later with swollen lymph glands, and this can hang around for several weeks or even months. It is rarely a severe illness for most people, but if you have a compromised immune system, such as people with HIV or chronic illness, then you should seek medical help when you are injured. You should also seek medical attention if you suspect you have this illness, because it has been linked to other problems as a complication [albeit rarely]. These include hepatitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia, arthritis, conjunctivitis and even convulsions and confusion in susceptible people. And, as the name implies, there is usually a history of a bite or scratch from a kitten or cat preceding the outbreak of the illness. A person often acquires CSD when a cat infected with certain bacteria, usually Bartonella henselae, bites or scratches him or her.
