Extractions: "Bosom Buddies" is the only support group in Naples specifically focused on breast cancer and lymphedema. Our numbers have grown to 80 women - some about to undergo surgery, others still in radiation and/or chemotherapy and others totally through the ordeal. Some are presently coping with lymphedema, the "ballooning limb" syndrome, a common condition when lymph nodes have been removed or radiated. We range in age from the 30s to the 80s. One of our number is a 25 year survivor! Outside of the meetings, we stay in touch with one another including those who may be out of town for treatment. We will accompany new members to their initial radiation treatments, visit members during their hospital confinements and otherwise encourage and support them before surgery and during their recovery. Six of our members are currently certified in the Reach to Recovery Program. They are on call 7 days a week to provide initial support to women in the hospital undergoing breast cancer surgery and at home during their recovery, and to their families. Chances are that a relative or a friend of yours has had or will at some time have breast cancer. It is becoming epidemic. The statistics are grim. One in eight women will likely be afflicted. In Florida, breast cancer is the second major cause of death from cancer among women. The women of Collier County are not immune to this epidemic.

To understand how it happens, you have to know a little bit about how blood and lymphatic fluid move around your body. Words on this page lymphatic fluid To keep from getting backed up, fluid has to keep moving within networks of vessels and channels. Blood travels from your heart to your arm in arteries and capillaries (the small blood vessels that connect arteries to veins). As the blood moves through the capillaries, it drops off important supplies to the cells in your arm: oxygen, nutrients, and a clear, colorless fluid called lymphatic fluid. The used blood keeps moving and travels back to the heart and lungs, where it gets refreshed. With every beat of your heart, fresh blood returns to your arm with fresh supplies. Lymph fluid also has to keep moving through the tissues of the arm back into the bloodstream. This fluid flows in another type of vessel, called lymphatics.

Lymphedema is the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the interstitial tissue that causes swelling, most often in the arms(s) and or leg(s), and occasionally in other parts of the body. Lymphedema can develop when lymphatic vessels are missing or malformed (primary), or when lymph vessels are damaged or removed (secondary). When the impairment becomes so great that lymphatic fluid exceeds the lymphatic transport capacity, an abnormal amount of protein-rich fluid collects in the tissues of the affected area. Left untreated, this stagnant, fluid not only causes tissue channels to increase in size and number, but also reduces oxygen availability in the transport system, interferes with wound healing, and provides a culture medium for bacteria which can result in lymphangitis (infection). Lymphedema should not be confused with venous insufficiency edema. However, untreated venous insufficiency can progress into a combined disorder, which is treated n the same was as Lymphedema. It is marked by an abnormal collection of excess tissue proteins, edema, chronic inflammation, and fibrosis. [ ] Lymphedema is a frequent complication of cancer and its therapies, and can have long-term physical and psychosocial consequences for patients. The human lymphatic system generally includes superficial or primary lymphatic vessels that form a complex dermal network of capillary-like channels that drain into larger, secondary lymphatic vessels located in the subdermal space. These primary and secondary lymphatic vessels parallel the superficial veins and drain into a third, deeper layer of lymphatic vessels located in the subcutaneous fat adjacent to the fascia. A muscular wall and numerous valves aid active, unidirectional lymphatic flow in secondary and subcutaneous lymphatic vessels. Primary lymphatic vessels lack a muscular wall and do not have valves. An intramuscular system of lymphatic vessels that parallels the deep arteries and drains the muscular compartment, joints, and synovium also exists. While there is evidence that the superficial and deep lymphatic systems communicate near lymph nodes, they probably function independently except in abnormal states. [

Primary lymphedema present at birth is called congenital lymphedema. Lymphedema praecox evolves in adolescence or mid-life. Lymphedema tarda evolves late in life. Secondary lymphedema is precipitated by an event causing blockage or interruption of the lymphatic vessels. In the United States the most common causes are surgery involving the lymph nodes, radiation therapy, trauma, and cancer. It is most often seen following surgery for cancer of the breast, pelvic area, and resections for lymphomas and melanomas. Symptoms of Lymphedema As lymphedema progresses, the involved areas swell more and more. Mobility can be severely impaired as the affected areas increase in girth. Joint movement is restricted and painful, and the skin over the involved areas becomes taut and dry. The subcutaneous tissues can become hard and fibrotic which impairs the flow of blood and oxygen to the area. This unhealthy state often leads to recurrent infections because the high protein lymph fluid is a good growth media for bacteria and fungi. These infections can be life threatening and may require hospitalization for intravenous antibiotic therapy.

Dr. Mark Taylor of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in England says the antibiotic kills the parasite through indirect means. Lymphoma Lymphedema Lymphoma is cancer of the lymphatic system. Lymphedema, which is swelling of the tissues due to disrupted functioning of the lymphatic system in not a form of cancer. Lymphoma diagnostic signs include swelling of the lymph nodes, which are commonly referred to as swollen glands. Lymphedema symptoms require prompt diagnosis and treatment; however, this condition does not have the same urgency as lymphoma.
