Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the body's tissues which causing swelling. This swelling is most often in the arms and/or legs, but occasionally occurs in other parts of the body. The effects of lymphedema can vary from very mild complications to extremely painful and disabling disfugurement. In addition, those with the lymphedema are often susceptible to serious life-threatening infections. The main focus of this site is the "questionnaire". Visitors fill out the questionnaire form that asks for information about their health insurance company, and any lymphedema clinics that they may have visited. When they submit the form, the information they provide goes into a database. Anyone can then search this database to read the ratings and opinions of others on the various hospitals, clinics and therapists that have been recorded. The theory is that over time, we will slowly build up a consensus on what insurance companies are providing coverage for lymphedema, and which clinics have a good reputation among their patients. This information can be then be used by others in making decisions about what companies or caregivers to patronize.

Lymphedema causes swelling of the affected extremity; however, not all swollen extremities are caused by lymphedema. In congestive heart failure the heart does not work as well as it should. Think of the heart as a pump with an inlet and an outlet. When a pump does not work as well as it should, the amount of fluid pumped out by the pump is decreased. In addition to this, the amount of fluid that the pump is trying to remove remains high. Congestive heart failure is very similar. In congestive heart failure, the amount of blood pumped out by the heart is less than normal, decreasing the total amount of oxygen available to the tissues. Patients with congestive heart failure become easily fatigued because the heart cannot pump enough blood to satisfy the oxygen requirements during periods of exercise. Since the output from the heart is low, the input into the heart from the veins is also diminished and blood builds up behind the heart much like water builds up behind a dam.

When the muscle pushes, the bandage holds the skin in place, so that the tissue is squeezed and wrung out, like a sponge. Lymphedema is a chronic swelling, due to inadequate lymph drainage. You are at risk for developing lymphedema if you have had lymph nodes removed and/or radiation treatment following breast cancer. Lymphedema is not just an issue for women who have had breast cancer surgery, it is also seen in all kinds of pelvic tumors in both men and women. The number of men who suffer with lymphedema in the legs is high. It is also becoming apparent that plastic surgery patients, who have had liposuction, are at risk from the disturbance in the lymph tissue following the intrusion of the cannula. Poor circulation of lymph and localized fluid retention may be caused by a sedentary lifestyle or activities which involve prolonged periods of standing, causing swelling in the feet and ankles. In North America, the most serious forms of lymphedema most often result from lymph node removal or damage to the channels from radiation during cancer treatment. Primary lymphedema can be caused by a congenital deficiency of the lymphatics. Filariasis, a parasitic disease, is a major cause of lymphedema world-wide, but is rarely seen in temperate climates.
