With heavy brush and a forest with deer behind her home in Gillette, Gaulke tried a new strategy three years ago: installing a tick-killing system in the brush fringing her yard. Bait inside the plastic boxes lures rodents that harbor the bacteria causing Lyme disease. A wick coats their fur with a chemical that kills ticks for up to six weeks. New boxes must be installed by trained pest control contractors each spring and summer. Developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Maxforce Tick Management System is one of a few new alternatives to widespread chemical spraying to kill ticks and prevent Lyme disease, which can cause long-term health problems and cost thousands of dollars to cure.

Other symptoms that occur frequently include headache, mood swings, irritability, depression, and marked fatigue. This section will describe some of the typical and less typical features of neuropsychiatric Lyme disease in adults. Lyme Disease is transmitted by an Ixodes tick infected with Borrelia burgdorferi. Borrelia burgdorferi Ixodes Scapularis Tick The spirochete which causes Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) can invade the central nervous system within days to a week of initial skin infection, as a result of dissemination through the blood stream. The majority of patients who are treated early with antibiotics do well and incur no long term problems. Patients who are not treated until later in the illness may have a more complicated course. While the symptoms often seen among patients with neuropsychiatric Lyme Disease are not specific to Lyme Disease and can also be found in other disorders, knowing the typical clusters of symptoms can be helpful when considering Lyme Disease as a possible diagnosis. The more multi-systemic the symptom presentation and the more clinical features observed in a patient from the list below, the more strongly Lyme disease should be considered. Other diagnostic possibilities need to be considered in the differential diagnosis, such as mood or anxiety disorders, collagen vascular or autoimmune diseases, spinal cord compression, multiple sclerosis, metastatic diseases, endocrinological disorders, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and residual damage from past brain trauma or toxin exposure.

FA stain (CDC) Introduction Lyme disease was first recognized in the United States in 1975 by Dr. Allen Steere, following a mysterious outbreak of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis near the community of Lyme, Connecticut. The rural location of the Lyme outbreak and the onset of illness during summer and early fall suggested that the transmission of the disease was by an arthropod vector. In 1982, the etiologic agent of Lyme disease was discovered by Willy Burgdorfer who isolated spirochetes belonging to the genus Borrelia from the mid-guts of Ixodes ticks. He showed that these spirochetes reacted with immune serum from patients that had been diagnosed with Lyme disease. Subsequently, the etiologic agent was given the name Borrelia burgdorferi. Since then, reports of Lyme disease have increased dramatically to the point that the disease has become an important public health problem in some areas of the United States. Today Lyme disease is the most prevalent tick-borne illness in the US. Lyme disease has been reported in 49 states and on four different continents. In 2002, there were 23,763 new cases reported in the U.S. Between 1996 and 2001 the number was level at about 17,000 new cases per year, but increased by nearly 7,000 cases in 2002.
