HISTORY Jennifer Stroud was a typical five year old girl with a mommy, daddy and brother living in Dallas, Texas. She loved to play dolls, loved her favorite cuddly Molly, giggled, laughed, played and skipped with her friends. Around Thanksgiving 1993, we noticed she was tiring and started to run a low grade fever. We also noticed she was starting to bruise easily when she bumped into things. Lynn took her to the pediatrician who ran a blood test and told her on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1993, that she needed to go to a hospital because she may have leukemia. Later that day, we were told by the doctors she had leukemia, and later that evening that it was acute myeloid leukemia, and she started emergency treatment called leukapheresis, which cycled her blood through a filter to decrease the amount of white blood cells. Her condition was classified as critical.

Extractions: ASH 2002 ... Your Health Tip What the heck is CML? Chronic myelogenous leukemia (pronounced my-ah- lah -jeh-nes) is a cancer of the bone marrow. It's also known as chronic myeloid leukemia and sometimes chronic granulocytic leukemia. When you have CML, your body's marrow the spongy stuff inside your bones that produces all of your blood cells sort of goes haywire and produces too many white blood cells, causing a variety of complications. Unlike other cancers, CML is not a solid tumor, and thus the cancer cannot be surgically removed. Only about 5,000 Americans are diagnosed with CML each year, qualifying it as an "orphan disease." About 2,300 die from it annually. While medications, including chemotherapy, can help stabilize you for several years, the only known potential cure is a bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow transplants are a relatively new medical procedure, having been around only since the 1980s. Today, transplants also include peripheral blood stem cell transplants (PBSCT) and cord blood transplants. New data are showing that PBSCTs might be more helpful to CML patients than the typical marrow transplant. Cord blood transplants are not likely to be widely used in CML patients, at least for the immediate future.

Acute leukemia may involve either lymphocytes, called acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), or myeloid cells, called acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). There are many different types of ALL and AML depending on the particular cell that has become malignant. Chronic leukemia primarily affects the myeloid cells in the bone marrow, called chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), and is found more commonly in adults, although children and teenagers also can sometimes develop CML. There also is a disorder of the bone marrow known as myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) , which is often associated with low blood cell counts and increased requirements for transfusions. This is often called a pre-leukemia syndrome because patients with MDS have a significantly increased risk of developing leukemia. Treatments We use allogeneic bone marrow stem cell transplantation to treat a variety of childhood leukemias or cancers and MDS that involve the cells within the bone marrow, also referred to as hematopoietic cells. In an allogeneic transplant, another person's bone marrow cells are used to restore bone marrow after high dose chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
