Synergy uses cookies to improve performance by remembering that you are logged in when you go from page to page. If the cookie cannot be set correctly, then Synergy cannot determine whether you are logged in and a new session will be created for each page you visit. This slows the system down. Therefore, you must accept the Synergy cookie to use the system. What Gets Stored in a Cookie? Synergy only stores a session ID in the cookie, no other information is captured. In general, only the information that you provide, or the choices you make while visiting a web site, can be stored in a cookie. For example, the site cannot determine your email name unless you choose to type it. Allowing a web site to create a cookie does not give that or any other site access to the rest of your computer, and only the site that created the cookie can read it. The Conversatron - Kluver-Bucy What causes the kluverbucy syndrome? What are its symptoms? That would bequite a trick, since that syndrome has only really been seen in experimental http://conversatron.com/archive/9692.html
Extractions: That would be quite a trick, since that syndrome has only really been seen in experimental monkeys. If part of the temporal lobes are removed the monkey cannot recognize objects (visual agnosia). These monkeys exhibit bizarre oral behaviors such as sticking things in their mouths that normal monkeys would have nothing to do with. They also become hyperactive and hypersexual making physical contact with almost anything in their environment.

Head Injury And Sexuality: A Literature Review The kluverbucy syndrome in humans, both atraumatic and following head injury, Isern, RD (1987) Family violence and the kluver-bucy syndrome. http://www.medlit.info/guests/Abstracts/Head-inj.htm
Extractions: Empirical data on head injury and human sexuality was mainly limited to small series or few parameters until 1988. In the last 4 years, substantive studies have documented the high prevalence and common patterns of disturbance to sexual behaviour following closed and penetrating head injuries of varying severity. Further light has been shed on the anatomical localisation of our polymorphous perversity, and studies of nontraumatic brain injury have illuminated atypical changes in sexual behaviour after penetrating head injury. Published principles of state of the art management are summarised. Head injury comprises traumatic damage to the skull and its contents, from penetration or acceleration/deceleration forces. Clinically, it implies evidence of raised intracranial pressure, loss of consciousness, post-traumatic amnesia, neurological signs of impaired brain function, and/or skull fracture. According to US statistics, for every million of the population, 4000 head injuries will occur each year, adding annually a further one hundred survivors of serious injury (Garden et al., 1990.)

Extractions: In this lecture, we summarise current ideas about the neural bases of emotion and the evidence that different brain areas may underlie different emotional states. Key learning objectives are that you will: Recommended reading: Toates, Carlson, Koob And Wishaw and all major textbooks in Psychobiology discuss these issues in varying detail and you are advised to look at several sources to get a broad view. There are also good concise review papers, such as: Trends in Cognitive Sciences, Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 3: A more comprehensive review was published recently: Traditional neural views of emotion The view that the expression of emotion is controlled by the limbic system controls the expression of emotion was first introduced by Papez (1937). The amygdala as emotional centre The amygdala as fear centre: some recent findings Recent neuropsychological data confirm and extend the view that the amygdala has a primary role in fearful responses.

Extractions: Heii Arai(Department of Psychiatry, Juntendo University School of Medicine) and Maki Takano The average life expectancy in Japan in 1947 was 54.0 yrs for females and 50.1 yrs for males. This increased greatly over the second half of the 20th century and currently stands at an average of 77.6 yrs for males and 84.6 yrs for females, according to a recent Government announcement in 2001. The proportion of the population of elderly people has been consequently growing rapidly due to this phenomenon as well as the concomitant decline in the birth-rate. Over 1.5 million elderly people are supposed to suffer from dementing illness in Japan, about half of whom probably have Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is one of the most common causes of dementia in the elderly. There are currently estimated to be about 11 million people worldwide with AD, and this number is forecast to double by the year 2025.
Extractions: kind of like blogging Main Kluver-Bucy Syndrome : "Damage to the front of the temporal lobe and the amygdala just below it can result in the strange condition called Kluver-Bucy Syndrome. Classically, the person will try to put anything to hand into their mouths and typically attempt to have sexual intercourse with it. A classic example is of the unfortunate chap arrested whilst attempting to have sex with the pavement. Effectively, it is the 'what' pathway that is damaged with regards to foodstuff and sexual partner. As Ramachandran puts it, 'they are not hypersexual, just indiscriminate.'" Cotard's Syndrome : "Named after a French psychiatrist Jules Cotard, this syndrome is characterized by the patient believing that he is dead, a walking corpse. This 'delusion' is usually expanded to the degree that the patient might claim that he can smell his own rotting flesh and feel worms crawling through his skin." Capgras' Syndrome : "Brilliantly described by Ramachandran, Capgras' syndrome is another neurological syndrome that is often mistaken for insanity. The Capgras' patient will typically identify people close to them as being imposters - identical in every possible way, but identical replicas. Classically, the patient will accept living with these imposters but will secretly 'know' that they are not the people they claim to be."

Extractions: Subject: Eating Disorder? Dear Anne, There are many disorders which cause over-eating, which can lead to obesity. You did not state your son's weight, or if his uncontrollable eating is associated with recurrent compensatory behaviors to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting, repeated laxative or diuretic use, or excessive exercise. If this should be the case, a diagnosis of bulimia nervosa is likely. Over-eating may also be seen in medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, and in rare syndromes such as Kluver-Bucy syndrome and Kleine-Levin syndrome, to name a few. The good news is that eating disorders can be successfully treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and medications. I hope you find this information helpful.
