Acting like a water filter that separates out harmful minerals and chemicals, the kidneys process about 200 quarts of blood in an adult every day to produce about 1 to 2 quarts of urine, which is made up of waste products and extra water. Urine leaves the kidneys (almost all people are born with two) through tubes called ureters , which empty into the bladder. Without the kidneys, waste products would build up in the blood and damage the body. The filtration process occurs in microscopic units inside the kidneys called nephrons ; each kidney has about a million nephrons. As they remove waste products and extra water, the nephrons return chemicals the body needs (such as sodium, phosphorus, and potassium) to the blood. Each chemical is vital to overall health and must be in proper balance. Too much or too little can be harmful. The kidneys also produce three important hormones: erythropoietin (uh-rith-ro- poy -uh-tin ), which stimulates the bone marrow to make red blood cells;

PKD cysts can reduce kidney function, leading to kidney failure. PKD can also cause cysts in the liver and problems in other organs, such as the heart and blood vessels in the brain. PKD is the fourth leading cause of kidney failure and affects approximately 500,000 people in the US. According to the National Kidney Foundation, about 50 percent of people with autosomal dominant form of PKD progress to kidney failure, or end-stage renal disease (ESRD) by age 60 and about 60 percent will have kidney failure by age 70.

Cysts generally develop in weak segments of the tubules that carry urine from the glomeruli. The cyst's growth displaces healthy kidney tissue. The kidneys expand to accommodate the cyst, which can weigh as much as 20 pounds. Three factors determine cyst classification: its cause (acquired, inherited), its features (complicated, simple, multiple, single), and its location (outer [cortical] or inner [medullary] kidney tissue).

The bladder is connected to the outside of the body by another tubelike structure called the urethra. The main function of the kidneys is to remove waste products and excess water from the blood. The waste products are generated from normal metabolic processes including the breakdown of active tissues, ingested foods, and other substances. Your kidneys allow you to continue to consume a variety of foods, drugs, vitamins and supplements, additives, and excess fluids without worry that toxic by-products will build up to harmful levels. The kidney also plays a major role in regulating levels of various minerals such as calcium, sodium, and potassium in the blood. As the first step in filtration, blood is delivered into the glomeruli by microscopic leaky blood vessels called capillaries. Here, blood is filtered of waste products and fluid while red blood cells, proteins, and large molecules are retained in the capillaries. In addition to wastes, some useful substances are also filtered out. The filtrate collects in a sac called Bowman capsule and drains into the tubule.

"'Am I going to live?' ' Will I be able to play basketball again?' 'And is there a cure for it?'" According the National Institutes of Health, about 20 million Americans suffer from chronic kidney disease, and it's a major cause of illness and sometimes death. Mourning's doctors were alerted to a problem during an annual physical, and the prognosis wasn't good. "Initially they said, 'Hey you've got about 12 months before you will need to go on dialysis, before you will be up for transplantation,'" he remembers. "They told me that this could be a detriment to my career and things could change. And they did." Mourning's condition and treatment forced him to sit out of the 2002-2003 NBA season. But he was determined to beat the odds. "I sent my attorney and my agent down and said look find the best nephrologist in the country."

Extractions: PKD is an inherited disease. This means that it is passed from parents to children. Every person has 23 different pairs of chromosomes, one set coming from each parent. The chromosomes are messengers which carry information in the form of genes. If you inherit the gene for PKD then you will either have the disease or you will be a silent carrier (where you don't have the disease but you may pass on the gene). This will depend on the type of PKD gene passed on to you.
