This shape prevents light from focusing precisely on the macula . As the disease progresses, the cone becomes more pronounced, causing vision to become blurred and distorted. Because of the cornea's irregular shape, patients with keratoconus are usually very nearsighted and have a high degree of astigmatism that is not correctable with glasses. Extractions: Keratoconus creates an irregular cornea that is a contraindication for most refractive surgery, but can be treated with Intacs inserts and/or C3-R. As keratoconus advances, rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses maybe the only non-surgical way to achieve clear vision. Contact lens fitting of a patient with keratoconus requires much care and frequent check-ups, because the condition can worsen.. Keratoconus is a contraindication for conventional or custom wavefront LASIK IntraLASIK PRK ... Epi-LASIK , or any refractive surgery technique that removes tissue, due to the high probability that these procedures may further weaken a cornea affected by keratoconus. RLE and P-IOL are lens-based procedures that neither add nor subtract from the cornea, however advanced keratoconus may require other surgery that would be best performed before RLE or P-IOL. CK has been successfully used to correct hyperopia and astigmatism in patients with keratoconus. CK simply makes vision better, however does not apparently help the underlying problem.

It's a disease in which the cornea (the outer surface of the eye in front of the pupil) becomes cone-shaped rather than spherical, and this results in extreme astigmatism. Glasses can't correct this vision problem, but hard contact lenses often can. Unfortunately, the distortion of the cornea makes it very difficult to fit contacts comfortably for a keratoconic my eye doctor described it as "trying to balance a saucer on the end of a football." Ultimately, the cornea may suffer scarring which results in vision loss that can't be corrected by contacts. At that point, the next step is to replace the damaged cornea with a new one through cornea transplant surgery. This is only necessary for about 10 percent of keratoconics, but I'm one of them. In a healthy eye, the cornea curves like a dome. In an eye with keratoconus, the center of the cornea slowly thins and bulges, so that it sags and has a cone shape (see illustration). In keratoconus, the posterior layer may tear in rare cases. When this happens, the cornea may suddenly become swollen with water (termed hydrops).Wrinkles and scars may also form on a keratoconus cornea. People with keratoconus may lose vision in two ways: l. From distortion of the cornea: Seeing through a misshapen cornea is like taking pictures with a camera whose lens has an irregular (not smooth) surface.
