Incontinence Can Be Controlled At least 13 million Americans experience urinary incontinence, the involuntaryleakage of urine sufficient to be a problem, and 11 million of them are women http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/1997/597_urin.html
Extractions: Incontinence Can Be Controlled by Carolyn J. Strange No one wants to talk about it. Patients don't bring it up. Physicians don't ask. Meanwhile, millions suffer in silence as urinary incontinence erodes their quality of life. When it is discussed, all too often, patients are toldincorrectlythat it's a normal consequence of aging and that they should just get used to it. Misconceptions about incontinence abound among health-care professionals and the public alike. At least 13 million Americans experience urinary incontinence, the involuntary leakage of urine sufficient to be a problem, and 11 million of them are women, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). Incontinence is also more common in older people. It's not surprising that about half of nursing home residents are incontinent since it's a major cause of institutionalization, according to numerous sources. But that doesn't mean it's a normal part of being a woman or of aging. "Incontinence is never normal at any age," says Neil Resnick, M.D., chief of gerontology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, and an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. "It's treatable in the vast majority of people, most of whom have full continence restored. Most of the remaining people can at a minimum be improved," he says. Despite its prevalence, urinary incontinence is widely underdiagnosed and underreported, and many health-care providers remain uneducated about it, according to a 1996 clinical practice guideline update from the Agency for Health Care Policy Research. It's also expensive. Americans spent about $27.8 billion on incontinence in 1995, according to NIDDK. The health-care impact is likely to increase as the baby boomers age.

Extractions: description The symptom includes involuntary loss of urine during physical exertion with increased intrabdominal pressure, such as with coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercise, lifting or sitting. The urine loss is usually not a large amount but the frequency with which it occurs may require wearing a pad constantly to avoid embarassment. features When lying down with legs apart, coughing produces a visible spurt of urine from the urethra. Standing up, with one leg on a stool and holding a paper towel over the perineum and coughing produces a wet stain on the paper towel. A cotton-tipped stick lubricated with xylocaine gel is placed into the urethra up to, but not through the internal urethral sphincter (Q-tip test). With straining or coughing, the stick rises more than 30 degrees from it's resting angle. This demonstrates urethral hypermobility and differentiates genuine stress incontinence from an intrinsic urethral sphincteric insufficiency (ISD) without hypermobility.

Newman, RNC, MSN, CRNP, FAAN Article topics: References Interstitial cystitis (IC), IC is a bladder syndrome found mostly in women that can result in a severe, debilitating, and chronic disorder. In the United States, IC affects approximately 500,000 persons of which the majority are women. Persons with IC have a bladder wall that is tender and easily irritated, which leads to uncomfortable symptoms. Women with IC complain of severe urinary urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal or perineal pain and pressure, painful sexual intercourse, and, in many cases, urinary incontinence. IC begins gradually and becomes progressively worse. Symptoms may go away for a period of time (remission), but usually return. Many persons with IC, especially women, are misdiagnosed. Women with chronic IC and severe nocturia may experience depression due to sleep deprivation. Many doctors believe that IC has psychosomatic origins and tell women patients, Its all in your head. This is not true. The exact cause of IC is not universally understood, but includes a variety of causes such as chronic infection of the bladder, lymphatic disease, autoimmune disorders (self-attacking disease where the body turns on itself), and even psychologic and neurologic conditions.
Stress Incontinence In Women - Patient UK Stress incontinence is the most common form of incontinence. Exercises to strengthenthe pelvic floor muscles are the usual treatment. http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/23068767/
Extractions: Understanding urine and the bladder The kidneys make urine all the time. A trickle of urine is constantly passing to the bladder down the ureters (the tubes from the kidneys to the bladder). You make different amounts of urine depending on how much you drink, eat and sweat. The bladder is made of muscle and stores the urine. It expands like a balloon as it fills with urine. The outlet for urine (the urethra) is normally kept closed. This is helped by the muscles beneath the bladder that sweep around the urethra (the pelvic floor muscles). When a certain amount of urine is in the bladder, you become aware that the bladder is getting full. When you go to the toilet to pass urine, the bladder muscle contracts (squeezes), and the urethra and pelvic floor muscles relax. Complex nerve messages are sent between the brain, the bladder, and the pelvic floor muscles. These make you aware of how full your bladder is and tell the right muscles to contract, or relax, at the right time.

Extractions: Urinary incontinence (UI) is the accidental or unwanted leakage of urine. An estimated 1.5 million Canadians have some type of bladder control problem, and most are women. Urinary incontinence can develop at any age, but as we get older it becomes more common because of changes in the body and illness that effect bladder function. However, studies show that only about 30 percent of people with incontinence seek treatment. Embarrassment or the belief that there is nothing that can be done may stop women from seeking treatment. This is unfortunate since there are many treatments available and most cases of urinary incontinence can be improved or cured. Most healthy people will empty their bladder about every three to four hours (four to eight times in 24 hours). Getting up once at night to urinate is normal. But getting up more often at night, leaking urine when doing activities, or not being able to hold your urine until you reach a nearby bathroom is not normal.
