The most common minor anomaly is the isolated posterior rachischisis, present in about 2% of asymptomatic persons; isolated anterior rachischisis is unusual, as well as isolated defects away from the midline. Ponticulus posticus , an ossified groove of the vertebral artery, asymmetrical atlanto-occipital joints and pseudonotch of the atlas, are other asymptomatic anomalies or variants. Other craniovertebral anomalies belong to two main groups: manifestations of an occipital vertebra and occipitalization of the atlas ( Fig.1 Fig.2 ). The presence of bony formations around the foramen magnum like a third condyle, and epitransverse or paracondyloid processes belong to the first group; fusion or assimilation of part or the entire atlas to the occiput belong to the second. Other craniovertebral anomalies are absent or separate odontoid, basilar impression and basilar invagination.

Four different forms were identified by Chiari, according to the degree of severity of the developmental anomaly of the hindbrain. Chiari I malformation involves caudal displacement of the cerebellar tonsils, and sometimes the inferior vermis, through the foramen magnum into the rostral cervical spinal canal. The Chiari II malformation involves displacement of the brain stem and lower cerebellum into the cervical spinal canal. In such cases, the fourth ventricle is caudally displaced and extends below the foramen magnum. Type II abnormality is nearly always associated with lumbar myelomeningoceles ( Fig.1 Chiari III malformation involves downward displacement of the medulla with herniation of the cerebellum initially through the foramen magnum, then dorsally through a cervical spina bifida, resulting in a cervical encephalocele ( Fig.2

Have your doctor check you for Mesothelioma or Pleural Mesothelioma today! Asbestos is a mineral widely used in the past because of its resistance to fire and heat. Loose asbestos fibers can lodge in the surrounding tissues of the lungs and cancerous tissues can develop into Pleural Mesothelioma. The disease may be treated with drugs like Alimta or Cisplatin, but it is essential for everyone to know the symptoma and get tested for Mesothelioma Home

Syringomyelia (SM) Causes Severe Pain, Paralysis in Growing Number of Cavaliers IN SHORT: Symptoms Diagnosis Treatment Breeders' Responsibilities ... Reduced Rate MRI Clinic Locations In Short: Syringomyelia (SM) is an extremely serious genetic condition in which cavities develop within the spinal cord near the brain, and fill with fluid. It is also known as "neck scratcher's disease", because one of its common signs is scratching in the air near the neck. SM is rare in most breeds but has become very widespread in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Researchers conservatively estimate that at least 50% of CKCSs have occipital hypoplasia, the skull bone malformation believed to cause syringomyelia. It is worldwide in scope and not limited to any country, breeding line, or kennel.
Extractions: Cardiovascular reflexes were assessed by simple noninvasive tests in 18 patients with syringomyelia restricted to the spinal cord (syringomyelia) and 22 patients with syringomyelia and brainstem signs (syringobulbia), and the results compared with a control group. Postural hypotension occurred more frequently in patients with bilateral brainstem signs, palatal weakness or vocal cord palsy. Vagal cardiovascular reflexes were disturbed

The original classic triad of features was described by Klippel and Feil as a short neck, a low hairline posteriorly, and a restricted range of motion of the neck. Since then, other musculoskeletal defects, as well as genitourinary, auditory, cardiopulmonary, and neurological anomalies, have been found to be frequently associated with Kipple-Feil syndrome . The various anomalies of cervical spine have been further characterized and defined . Most patients who have this syndrome are first seen with restricted motion of the neck, torticollis, webbing of the neck, or Sprengel deformity
