The features of the clinical picture may include migraine, memory loss, vein and artery thrombosis, multiple sclerosis and recurrent miscarriage. Because one of the main features includes thrombosis (blood clotting), the name 'sticky blood syndrome' has often been used as a shorthand to describe this condition. APS affects individuals from all ethnic backgrounds. Although individuals of all ages may be affected, most show features of APS before 45 years. The increased tendency to form blood clots in individuals with APS may have a devastating effect on any part of the body including the legs, arms, chest, head and a number of 'internal' organs such as the kidney and liver. Commonly, blood clots develop in the veins of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) causing pain and swelling, usually starting in the calf. Clotting in the leg may happen once or several times. Clots may also occur in the lung (pulmonary embolus). Clotting in arteries can result in strokes or heart attacks.

Microsoft offers self-insured medical insurance that is extremely liberal for all practical purposes there was no deductible or restrictions on any tests that my MD wish to try – of course, living in the US meant a wealth of private facilities and laboratories. From1969 he spent two years in New York at the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, where he was part of the team which introduced anti-DNA assays for the diagnosis and management of systemic lupus erythomatosus. Hughes returned to London in 1970 and in 1971 succeeded Professor Eric George Lapthorne Bywaters (1910-2003) as Head of Rheumatology at the Hammersmith Hospital and became Reader in Medicin. That year he set up Britain's first dedicated lupus clinic, at The Hammersmith Hospital.
