Extractions: Home Algemeen Onderwijs Ad Valvas ... English Hemihypertrophy Ivo Crnolatac , Laboratorium voor Farmaceutische Biologie en Fytofarmacologie, Van Evenstraat 4, 3000 Leuven Hemihypertrophy is a rare condition that is found either as an isolated feature, or associated with one of a number of so called 'overgrowth syndromes', as one of the symptoms. Hemihypertrophy is best defined as asymmetry between the right and left sides of the body to a greater degree than can be attributed to normal variation. This asymmetry often appears as a difference in the size or length of the extremities, but it may also involve the head, trunk, and internal organs. It is often extremely difficult to distinguish hemihypertrophy from normal variation. However, this distinction is very important because young children who have hemihypertrophy are at increased risk of malignant intra-abdominal tumours, such as Wilms tumour or hepatoblastoma. The increased risk of neoplasia has led to the controversial recommendation of frequent abdominal ultrasound and blood screening designed to detect the tumour at the earliest possible stage. Additional features vary according to which (if any) overgrowth syndrome is present. Most widespread example is Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, a congenital overgrowth syndrome with variable expression, that occurs with an incidence of 1:13,700 births. Most cases occur sporadically, but approximately 15% are familial, hemihypertrophy occuring in around 24% of cases. The major features are abdominal wall defects, enlarged tongue (macroglossia), and large birth weight or postnatal growth and less commonly low blood sugar in infancy, organ enlargement, congenital kidney anomalies and a predisposition to the development of tumours affecting embryonic tissue.

Extractions: Recurrent Wilms' Tumor This summary on Wilms' tumor is an overview of prognosis, diagnosis, classification, and treatment. The National Cancer Institute created the PDQ database to increase the availability of new treatment information and its use in treating patients. Information and references from the most recently published literature are included after review by pediatric oncology specialists. Cancer in children and adolescents is rare. Children and adolescents with cancer should be referred to medical centers that have a multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists with experience treating the cancers that occur during childhood and adolescence. This multidisciplinary team approach incorporates the skills of the primary care physician, pediatric surgical subspecialists, radiation oncologists, pediatric medical oncologists/hematologists, rehabilitation specialists, pediatric nurse specialists, social workers, and others in order to ensure that children receive treatment, supportive care, and rehabilitation that will achieve optimal survival and quality of life. Guidelines for pediatric cancer centers and their role in the treatment of pediatric patients with cancer have been outlined by the American Academy of Pediatrics. ] At these pediatric cancer centers, there are clinical trials available for most of the types of cancer that occur in children and adolescents, and the opportunity to participate in these trials is offered to most patients/families. Clinical trials for children and adolescents with cancer are generally designed to compare potentially better therapy with therapy that is currently accepted as standard. The majority of the progress made in identifying curative therapies for childhood cancers have been achieved through clinical trials. Information about ongoing clinical trials is available from the NCI (http://cancernet.nci.nih.gov/trialsrch.shtml).
