Extractions: How does the heart work? The heart has four chambers - two atria and two ventricles. The walls of the heart chambers are made mainly of special heart muscle. Each heartbeat starts with a tiny electrical impulse near the top of the heart which spreads through the heart muscle, and makes it contract (squeeze). The electrical impulse travels first through the atria, which contract to pump blood into the ventricles. The impulse then travels through to the ventricles, which contract to pump blood into the arteries. (Another leaflet called 'How the Heart Works' gives more detail.) What is heart failure? In a normal healthy heart, all the blood that comes into the heart is easily pumped out again. If you have heart failure, your heart cannot cope with pumping the full amount of blood, or it tires more easily than normal. Some 'power' of the heart is lost. Heart failure does not mean that your heart is going to stop at any minute. It simply means that your heart does not pump as well as it used to do.

Extractions: Skip directly to Content HOMEPAGE Take a look at our redesigned website now! The leading website on natural health! Tens of millions of people worldwide suffer from heart failure, which results in shortness of breath, edema and fatigue. The number of heart failure patients has tripled over the last few decades. The epidemic spread of this disease is largely due to the fact that, until now, the causes of heart failure have been insufficiently, or not at all, understood. In some cases, heart failure is the result of a heart attack; in most cases, however, such as with cardiomyopathies, heart failure develops without any prior cardiac event. Learn more about Cellular Health Conventional medicine is largely confined to treating the symptoms of heart failure. Diuretic drugs are given to flush out the water that is retained in body tissues because of the weak pumping function of the heart. However, they also flush out water-soluble micronutrients, thereby causing additional health problems. The still insufficient understanding of the causes of heart failure explains the unfavorable prognosis of this disease. Five years after a heart failure condition is diagnosed, only 50% of the patients are still alive. For many patients with heart failure, a heart transplant operation is the last resort. Most heart failure patients, however, die without ever having the option of such an operation.

Extractions: Heart failure does not mean the heart stops, it is simply not pumping blood as it should so the body does not get as much blood and oxygen as it needs. It is caused by blocked arteries, past heart attack which has done some damage to the heart muscle or heart defects present since birth. High blood pressure, heart valve or heart muscle disease and infection of the heart or valves are also causes. Blood backs up in the veins, causing a build up which leads to swelling in the feet, ankles and legs, called edema. Too much fluid can also build up in the lungs causing pulmonary congestion. The result is shortness of breath, especially when lying down, a feeling of being tired and run-down, swelling in the feet, ankles and legs, weight gain from fluid build up and confusion or an inability to think clearly. Professor Henry Dargie, professor of cardiology at the University of Glasgow, said: "Heart failure is basically when the heart is failing to do its job properly.
Extractions: (CNN) Congestive heart failure was once considered to be a concern primarily for older people. But a new study in this week's Circulation journal says people as young as 40 have a 1-in-5 chance of developing the potentially deadly disease. CNN anchor Carol Costello talked with medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta about the study and what steps to take to stay healthy. COSTELLO: Let's talk about this congestive heart failure study, because this is scary, because I happen to be in that age group. But one in five over 40 could suffer from that and not even know it? GUPTA: Right. See, the thing that's interesting about this particular study is we hear numbers a lot about cancer risks. We hear that you have a 1 in 8 chance of developing certain sorts of cancers. They haven't done those sort of statistical analysis before for congestive heart failure, and so this is the first time they've done it. One in 5, as you mentioned, Carol, over age 40, chance of developing congestive heart failure. If you have high blood pressure, that risk doubles to 2 out of 5. And these are all things we've sort of known but these numbers are pretty dramatic.

The urgent communique came hours after the Pope's health worsened with a high fever caused by an infection. "Following a urinary tract infection, septic shock and a cardio-circulatory collapse occurred," Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said. On Thursday, he received the Holy Viaticum, the Catholics' last rites for the sick and dying, the spokesman said. This is a sign that his closest advisers fear the end of one of the longest papal reigns is fast approaching, says the BBC's David Willey in Rome. And, for the first time during the Pope's current illness, the mood at the Vatican has suddenly shifted to one of pessimism, our correspondent says. This morning the condition of the Holy Father is very serious

Extractions: 888-INFO-FDA The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved BiDil (bye-DILL), a drug for the treatment of heart failure in self-identified black patients, representing a step toward the promise of personalized medicine. Heart failure is a condition in which the heart is weakened and does not pump enough blood. It can be caused by a variety of damage to the heart, including heart attacks, high blood pressure, and infections. The approval of BiDil was based in part on the results of the African-American Heart Failure Trial (A-HeFT). The study, which involved 1,050 self-identified black patients with severe heart failure who had already been treated with the best available therapy, was conducted because two previous trials in the general population of severe heart failure patients found no benefit, but suggested a benefit of BiDil in black patients. Patients on BiDil experienced a 43% reduction in death and a 39% decrease in hospitalization for heart failure compared to placebo, and a decrease of their symptoms of heart failure. BiDil is a combination of two older drugs, neither approved for heart failurehydralazine and isosorbide dinitrate.
