Extractions: Nail-Patella syndrome (NPS) is a rare genetic disorder that causes abnormalities of bone, joints, fingernails and kidneys. NPS is commonly characterized by absent or under-developed kneecaps and thumbnails. It is estimated to occur in one in 50,000 newborns. Researchers at the U-M Kellogg Eye Center have found strong evidence of a link between glaucoma and Nail-Patella syndrome. A research study was initiated after Paul Lichter, M.D. , noticed a glaucoma patient had no thumbnails and recalled the patient's mother, whom he had treated years earlier, also lacked thumbnails. Both patients had NPS in addition to glaucoma. Other family members were subsequently examined, and some who previously were unaware of NPS were diagnosed with the disorder. Lichter's research team examined 24 people with Nail-Patella syndrome in two families and found that more than half of them suffered from glaucoma. "As a result of these findings, we recommend people with Nail-Patella syndrome have regular ophthalmologic exams so glaucoma can be diagnosed and treated as early as possible," said Lichter, who is chairman of the University of Michigan Health System's Department of Ophthamology and director of the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center.

People who have their eyes regularly checked with either an optometrist or an ophthalmologist as part of a routine eye exam will be as part of the exam tested for a serious eye disease known as glaucoma. This is a relatively silent disease that can strike at anytime, and when symptoms are finally detected, for some it may be too late. There are two types of glaucomaacute and chronic. Thankfully the acute form is rare, but nonetheless when it does occur, immediate treatment should be sought to prevent permanent loss of vision. Basically, glaucoma is a condition where pressures will build up within the eyeball. It is like a sink that is filling up with water, and with the drain closed. If you place some kind of a flexible cover over the sink, the cover will start to bulge outward. Similarly, this is what happens inside the eyeball, and if left untreated can lead to impaired vision or permanent blindness. The eye normally discharges this buildup of fluid through a network of tissues called a âdrainage angle.â Problems begin when proper drainage within the eyeball does not take place through this area called the âdrainage angle,â which is located between the iris and the cornea. As long as this âdrainage angleâ does not function correctly, the pressures will continue to build in the eyeball, and this in turn will reduce the blood flow to the retina and the optic nerve.

(FCGCF) is dedicated to supporting the activities of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus, a group of United States Congress members who are dedicated to helping all Americans fight the scourge of glaucoma and other eye diseases. FCGCF provides diagnostic screenings opportunities for high risk glaucoma population groups in their home districts across the nation. In support of the 81 members and former members of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus, FCGCF arranges and provides screenings for glaucoma and other eye diseases throughout the United States at no cost to screening participants. From April 2001 to September 2004 we have screened approximately 36,000 individuals and have held over 1400 screenings nationwide. Of those screened, approximately 33% were referred for further vision related medical treatment, and of those referred, 15% displayed signs consistent with glaucoma. It is well known that for the vast majority of individuals with glaucoma, the chances of preserving their sight is significantly improved if diagnosed and treated early enough. FCGCF targets groups of people at high risk of developing glaucoma or other eye disease, such as African Americans and Hispanics over the age of 40. We also target geographic areas, where adequate eye care is unavailable. FCGCF utilizes mobile facilities, complete with the most up-to-date screening equipment, so that we can travel to high risk areas.

The drainage channels from the eye become blocked over time and vision gradually becomes impaired. Developmental glaucoma mostly affects babies and young children. It is rare but potentially serious and is caused by malformation of the eye.
