Many workers who handle heavy objects are instructed to lift by their legs, not their backs and try to reinforce their backs with lumbar supports lightweight elastic belts around the lower back. But there's new evidence that lumbar supports and educating people about how to lift heavy objects have little impact on the overall incidence of low back pain and the sick leave that goes with it. The findings are reported in the journal of The American Medical Association. Researchers looked at roughly 300 airline cargo workers. They found that less than half the workers consistently wore the lumbar back supports, which they say is not unusual.      Extractions: High eye pressure not only increases the risk of developing glaucoma, but also causes progression of glaucoma and visual field defects. The mainstay of glaucoma treatment is to lower the eye pressure, either with eyedrops or surgery. Progression of visual field defects can be practically halted if the eye pressure is lowered below 12 mm Hg. Even in patients with a type of glaucoma in which visual field defects occur and progress despite the eye pressure being in the normal range (normal-tension glaucoma), reducing the eye pressure by 30% is associated with less visual field loss. Other eye pressure-independent strategies for glaucoma management are being currently investigated. These include increasing blood supply to the optic nerve and providing some forms of neuroprotection. Perhaps in the future, we will have ways other than eye pressure reduction to manage glaucoma. Until then, lowering the eye pressure is the only method for reducing the risk of glaucoma visual field loss and remains the primary goal of therapy. Glaucoma Treatment-An Evolving Paradigm Alphagan There are two primary mechanisms for lowering eye pressure: 1) Decrease the amount of aqueous humor coming into the eye i.e. reduce the production of aqueous, and 2) Increase the amount of aqueous leaving the eye i.e. increase the outflow of aqueous. Some medications decrease the production of aqueous humor whereas others increase the outflow. Aqueous humor flows out of the eye using two pathways: one that is sensitive to eye pressure (the trabecular meshwork pathway) and one that operates independently of eye pressure (the uveoscleral pathway).

Most dogs with primary glaucoma suffer from narrow angle glaucoma, in which the iridocorneal angle progressively closes over time, resulting in obstruction of aqueous outflow through the iridocorneal angle (figure 1) . Primary open angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma in people and is characterized by a more chronic insidious onset. In the canine population, open angle glaucoma exists almost solely in the Beagle. Unfortunately, primary glaucoma (either narrow angle or primary open angle) is a bilateral disease, with the fellow eye being affected within 6 to 12 months of initial diagnosis. Client education regarding the eventual prognosis is therefore a crucial part of the clinical management of primary glaucoma. It is also important to educate clients regarding the heritability of primary glaucoma and to discourage breeding of affected dogs. Prophylactic therapy of the fellow eye has been shown to increase the time to onset of glaucoma, but not to prevent glaucoma altogether.

Most, but not all, of these diseases typically produce elevated pressure inside the eye, called intraocular pressure (IOP). Normal IOP is measured in millimeters of mercury and can range from 10-21 mm Hg. An elevated IOP is the most important risk factor for the development of glaucoma. Elevated IOP is sometimes called ocular hypertension. If your doctor diagnoses ocular hypertension, it does not mean you have glaucoma, but it does mean you are at a higher risk for developing the condition, and you should see an ophthalmologist (a medical doctor who specializes in eye care and surgery) frequently. In the worst cases, the damage can lead to blindness, but this need not happen if glaucoma is detected and treated early. The most common type, called open angle glaucoma (or chronic simple glaucoma), affects around two in every hundred people over the age of 40, and becomes more common with increasing age. The eyeball is filled with a watery fluid called aqueous humour, which creates pressure and helps maintain the shape of the eyeball (see the diagram, below). The aqueous humour that fills the anterior chamber (front part of the eye) is produced by the ciliary body, just behind the iris. The fluid drains back into the bloodstream through sieve-like channels called the trabecular meshwork. Normally, the amount of fluid produced is balanced by the amount draining away, so the pressure in the eye stays constant.
