Whorwell, M.D., University Hospital of South Manchester, England Unfortunately, the word "hypnosis" often conjures up a whole variety of frequently quite negative connotations even within the medical profession. Many equate the phenomenon with the mind being taken over by the hypnotist and with loss of control by the recipient, which needless to say, is completely erroneous. As a consequence of this, the whole subject is surrounded by a cloud of mystery, which regrettably is often encouraged by those who practice the technique. Although unlikely to ever happen, it would probably be best if a completely new word could be coined for that of hypnosis so that all the "baggage" that accompanies it could be left behind. It seems likely that a variety of techniques such as relaxation, yoga, transcendental meditation, reflexology, aromatherapy, and others are different methods of achieving a similar state to that witnessed in hypnosis. Hypnosis probably only differs in that it concentrates more on the "trance" element and is usually targeted at a specific problem, which in the past has most often been identified as psychological. However, we have applied the use of hypnosis in a more physical way without, of course, forgetting its psychological benefits.

Extractions: Children with Hirschsprung's disease are missing the nerve cells ("ganglion cells") within the wall of their colon or rectum. These cells are responsible for the normal wave-like motion of the bowel (peristalsis), and when they are missing the stool stops and an obstruction occurs. The length of affected bowel varies, but the most common transition point is in the upper rectum or the sigmoid colon. Hirschsprung's disease is also called megacolon. It is a congenital disease, which means a person is born with it. The disease may also be hereditary, which means a parent can pass it to a child. Hirschsprung's disease affects mainly infants and children. Symptoms Although symptoms usually begin within a few days after birth, some people don't develop them until childhood or even adulthood. In infants, the primary symptom is not passing meconium, an infant's first bowel movement, within the first 24 to 48 hours of life. Other symptoms include 1) vomiting and abdominal distention as a newborn, 2) chronic constipation, or 3) more rarely diarrhea, fever, and distention (symptoms associated with enterocolitis inflammation of the small intestine and colon). Symptoms in older children include passing small watery stools, diarrhea, and a lack of appetite.

Extractions: Diplomate ABVP (Feline) G astrointestinal disorders are among the most common problems encountered in feline medicine. Most vomiting and diarrhea episodes occur suddenly and resolve quickly. The causes are usually benign, such as eating an unfamiliar food. However, some patients may have vomiting and/or diarrhea over a period of weeks to months. In the diagnosis of these chronic disorders, the first step is to rule out other causes by using blood tests, stool examinations, x-rays and possibly other tests. Veterinarians will want to ensure that the patient is not suffering from an illness such as chronic kidney failure, pancreatitis, or hyperthyroidism which can also cause vomiting and diarrhea. When all non-gastrointestinal illnesses are eliminated, the various gastrointestinal disorders need to be considered. Among these are Ollulanus tricuspis (stomach worm infection), Helicobacter infection (a bacterial infection of the stomach), inflammatory bowel disease, colitis, and intestinal lymphoma. Of these, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is by far the most common. IBD is actually a group of gastrointestinal disorders, usually chronic in nature, which are characterized by an increase in the number of inflammatory cells found in the lining of the stomach or intestinal tract. These changes can affect the function of the organ involved. The causes of IBD are variable, and often no single cause can be identified in a given patient. The symptoms include chronic vomiting, diarrhea, or both, and in some cases, weight loss and change in appetite. Some patients may defecate outside their litter box, especially if diarrhea is present. The symptoms may be cyclical in nature, with the cat appearing to be normal at times. It is not unusual for these patients to be misdiagnosed as having hairballs.
