On June 22, 2001 I graduated from Fayetteville-Manlius High school in Syracuse, New York with (4.3 GPA) honor roll. I was the first special education student inducted in the Oak Chapter of FM High school as a National Honor Society member. In May 2003 I graduated from the Berkshire Hills Music Academy in South Hadley, Massachusetts after two-year residential Post-secondary study in Music and Human services. Emerging from the academy with higher music skills and the successful experience of independent living on a college campus, I will continue to do solo performances and self-advocacy workshops. I have a job in Rome, NY working as self-advocate with OMRDD. I have been involved in Special Education and Special Olympics. My mom says I am her very special son.

Glossary of terms Summary The NDSCR has accumulated over 17,000 anonymous records since the Register started in January 1989. It is now probably the largest single dataset on Down syndrome and provides an opportunity to search for possible causal factors. It also enables the study of the response of parents and clinical services to the new technologies of screening and diagnosis. Please see Annual Report (2003) for details. Maternal age is the only well-recognised association of Down syndrome. Mothers below 25 have an average risk of a DS pregnancy of about 1:1600 rising to about 1:340 at 35 and 1:40 at age 43. The data we have suggests that the risk of an affected birth does not increase above this age. Prenatal screening and diagnosis have expanded dramatically in the life of the Register. Despite this expansion, in 1999 44% of all diagnoses were at birth. Prenatal diagnosis depends on an invasive test to obtain fetal cells. Because this entails a risk of fetal loss, of 1 to 2%, it is only offered to mothers with a greater risk of having an affected child. The estimation of this risk, previously limited to high maternal age, is now much more precise with the addition of specific ultrasound and/or maternal serum findings.

Extractions: Health care providers offer their pregnant patients a screening test that identifies pregnancies at higher-than-average risk of certain serious birth defects , including neural tube defects such as spina bifida (sometimes called open spine) and some chromosomal disorders (Down syndrome and trisomy 18). This blood test, which can provide valuable information about a developing fetus, has a number of names including maternal serum (blood) screening test, multiple marker screening test, triple screen, quad screen and others. Its important to understand that, in most cases, an abnormal test result shows an increased risk, but not a definite problem with the baby. Further testing usually rules out the suspected problem. What does this test measure?
