CLINICAL TRIALS Search This Site Diabetes insipidus is a condition that results from insufficient production of the antidiuretic hormone (ADH), a hormone that helps the kidneys and body conserve the correct amount of water. Normally, the antidiuretic hormone controls the kidneys' output of urine. It is secreted by the hypothalamus (a small gland located at the base of the brain) and stored in the pituitary gland and then released into the bloodstream. ADH is secreted to decrease the amount of urine output so that dehydration does not occur. Diabetes insipidus, however, causes excessive production of very diluted urine and excessive thirst. To make up for lost water, you may feel the need to drink large amounts. You are likely to urinate frequently, even at night, which can disrupt sleep or, on occasion, cause bedwetting. Because of the excretion of abnormally large volumes of dilute urine, you may quickly become dehydrated if you do not drink enough water. Children with DI may be irritable or listless and may have fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. In its clinically significant forms, DI is a rare disease. Top DI should not be confused with diabetes mellitus, which results from insulin deficiency or resistance leading to high blood glucose. Diabetes insipidus and diabetes mellitus are unrelated, although they can have similar signs and symptoms, like excessive thirst and excessive urination. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is far more common than DI and receives more news coverage. DM has two forms, referred to as type 1 diabetes (formerly called juvenile diabetes, or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, or IDDM) and type 2 diabetes (formerly called adult-onset diabetes, or noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, or NIDDM). DI is a different form of illness altogether.

Extractions: Main Diseases and Conditions Diabetes inspidus (DI) is a disorder that causes increased urination ( polyuria ) and increased thirst . It is caused by either a decrease in the hormone arginine vasopressin ( central DI ), or because the kidney does not respond correctly to the hormone ( nephrogenic DI ). Arginine vasopressin is a hormone that normally stimulates the collecting ducts of the kidney to reabsorb water, so if it is not able to work correctly, the kidney produces a very large volume of dilute urine. Arginine vasopressin is normally produced in the hypothalamus , and so there can be a decrease in the its production caused by any condition that disrupts the hypothalamus, including brain tumors and head trauma, and some inherited conditions (septo-optic dysplasia). Nephrogenic DI can either be inherited or it can be a side effect of some medications, including Lithium, and some chronic conditions, such as sickle cell anemia, pyelonephritis, and urinary tract obstructions. In addition to increased thirst and urination, other symptoms can include irritability, poor growth, nocturnal enuresis (wetting the bed at night), and if your child is not able to drink enough fluids to keep up with the large amount of fluid being lost from excessive urination, then your child may develop
