An extended matching paper will replace the existing MCQs and they will be no negative marking. The test will probably be easier than the previous format. To familiarize the candidates with the new formats, test 34 and onward will follow the new style as described below by the College.

SUMMARY Purpose/methods: The purpose is to discuss the surgical result in a case with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO) associated with strabismus and diplopia. The authors present a patient with mitochondrial myopathy and CPEO who was treated using adjustable recessions with local anaesthesia.

PF Chinnery, MA Johnson, RW Taylor, WF Durward and DM Turnbull Department of Neurology, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. We report a sporadic case of chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia that developed during childhood and was associated with ragged-red and cytochrome c oxidase (COX)-negative fibers in skeletal muscle. Sequencing of all the mitochondrial transfer RNA (tRNA) genes identified a single potentially pathogenic mutationa T to C transition at position 4274 in the tRNA(Ile) gene. This mutation was not present in skeletal muscle from
