The sexually transmitted disease chlamydia usually comes with no telltale symptoms, so most people don't even know when they are infected. But left untreated, the so-called "silent epidemic" of chlamydia threatens to cause reproductive damage and infertility in many of the 3 million to 4 million Americans who get it each year. "Chlamydia's consequences can be devastating," says Diane Mitchell, M.D., an obstetrician-gynecologist and medical reviewer with the Food and Drug Administration. Because the signs of chlamydia often go unnoticed, an individual can develop serious health complications before they recognize that they are infected. There are approximately 3 million cases of chlamydia in the US each year and 3 out of every 4 cases reported were in individuals under the age of 25. Though the disease is easily treatable, it can be present without showing any symptoms and individuals can go a long time without knowing they are infected. Chlamydia is a particularly dangerous disease because there are many infected individuals who experience no symptoms. Men who do experience symptoms typically experience watery or milky discharge from the urethra as well as painful urination. In addition, chlamydia may cause the testicles to become swollen causing irritation. Women may also experience symptoms such as discomfort when urinating which becomes more frequent as the condition develops. Women often do not experience any symptoms, and therefore may have a higher propensity to carry the disease untreated. Chlamydia will also increase vaginal discharge and possibly light bleeding between periods. This bleeding may indicate that the infection has spread to the uterus. Anal infection may cause discomfort and produce discharge.
