INTRODUCTION Acute gastroenteritis is one of the most common childhood illnesses encountered today. Vomiting and diarrhea often cause dehydration. Although the disease is usually self-limiting, patients may require rehydration therapy. Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) is rare, with fewer than 30 cases reported in children. First described in 1959, it is a demyelinating process that affects the central pons and may involve other white matter areas. CPM presents with an altered

WhataBreeze 09-15-2004, 10:40 PM Hello Browny, There are a few of us floating around BT as you will see. Our closest cousin will be those in the MS forums. I have found that most don't have a clue what CPM is however most on this site have been very kind and accepting to those of us that unfortunately were totally forgot about mainly because we were dead before they got to us. In time, slowly but surely I'm hoping we might just find enough of us to make a dent in the wonderful world of medicine. Saying my prayers that a real inteligent research MD might pick up on a few of us seeing that we aren't totaled yet. I hope to chat more with you and a few others will come out of the woodwork to say hi. God Bless. :) tragic 09-27-2004, 08:09 PM

A 4-year-old boy was seen in an emergency department after 3 days of vomiting and watery diarrhea. After his sodium level decreased from 136 to 118 mEq/L, he had a seizure, resulting in respiratory arrest, and required mechanical ventilation. His sodium level increased to 128 mEq/L with rehydration, but

Indian Journal of Nephrology. 1992 Jan-Mar; 2(1): 19-20 ABSTRACT: We report a patient with renal failure, altered sensorium, bilateral cerebellar ataxia and pathological laughter. MRI showed demyelination of the pons and midbrain. He showed a complete recovery from the neurological deficit and successful renal transplantation was later carried out. Extractions: Introduction Focal symmetric demyelination in the CNS may be precipitated by aggressive correction of a hyper or hypoosmolar state - osmotic myelinolysis.1 Since the first descriptions of central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) were put forth in 1959 in alcoholic patients, it has become evident that myelinolysis is not exclusively restricted to the pons. In many cases myelinolysis may share other brain regions, while in still others the pons may not be affected at all - extra-pontine myelinolysis(EPM).2 Hence, specific anatomical locations are more susceptible to demyelination than others.

Articles by Yaghmai, F RA Castillo, RA Ray, and F Yaghmai Central pontine myelinolysis, also known as osmotic demyelination syndrome, is an uncommon disorder associated with rapid correction of severe hyponatremia. We present the case of a healthy young pregnant woman with hyperemesis gravidarum who developed severe hyponatremia (serum sodium 103 mEq/L). After rapid correction of her serum sodium within 12-15 hours with a 0.9% saline solution, the patient became comatose and died of sepsis and respiratory failure. Examination of the brain showed extensive demyelination in both pontine and extrapontine areas.

Extractions: Find more abstracts about Wernicke's Encephalopathy and HG than the many we have listed at the bottom of this page. Neurological Conditions like Wernicke's Encephalopathy and Central Pontine Myelinolysis are easily treated, but most likely to cause a fatal result for the mother and unborn child if left untreated. Considering the vast amount of research, it is amazing that many health care professionals are still unaware of these complications. Wernicke's Encephalopathy Classic Signs: Diplopia, nystagmus, disorientation, confusion, and coma. Unfortunately, Wenicke's Encephalopathy (WE) is not uncommon in hyperemesis gravidarum due to malnutrition, yet is very often goes unrecognized until significant and potentially permanent morbidity occurs. It can be fatal in up to 20% of cases, and may even cause spontaneous abortion (miscarriage).
