The symptoms of bipolar in children may also appear like the symptoms of other disorders. (2) Many times bipolar disorder may co-occur with other disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or conduct disorder.(4) This may really confuse things in making a diagnosis. The treatment plan for bipolar disorder in children is based on the treatment for bipolar in adults.(2) There has not been much research done on the effectiveness of treatment of bipolar in children. There is a great need for research and studies on children with bipolar, especially in the area of treatment and how effective these treatments are. There are however some studies of bipolar in children that is presently going on. (2) Usually the treatment consists of a combination of medication therapy and psychotherapy.(5) Lithium and/or valproate are the medications most prescribed by doctors for bipolar disorder. It has proven to be effective for treating the symptoms of mania in adults with bipolar disorder. Lithium has also been effective in limiting the chances of a reoccurrence of manic episodes. However there is very limited data on the effectiveness of lithium on children with bipolar disorder and research is ongoing.(6) The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is currently funding multi-site studies to determine the effectiveness of lithium and other mood stabilizers on adolescents.(2)
