Extractions: BENIGN BREAST CHANGES Many women do not check their breasts because they are afraid they might find a lump which could be cancerous. The vast majority of breasts lumps are non-cancerous and do not lead in the future to cancer. 85% of breast lumps are proven to be benign. However, because breast cancer is so common in women, all lumps should be promptly evaluated by a trained physician or nurse. The information on this page is obtained from Understanding Breast Chancer: A Health Guide for All Women National Cancer Institute Publication No. 93-3536 Printed April 1993 A woman practicing BSE can encounter a broad variety of benign breast conditions. These include normal changes that occur during the menstrual cycle as well as several types of benign lumps. What they have in common is that they are not cancer. Even among breast lumps that warrant a biopsy, some 80 percent prove to be benign. Each breast has 15 to 20 sections, called lobes, each with many smaller lobules. The lobules end in dozens of tiny bulbs that can produce milk. The lobes, lobules, and bulbs are all linked by thin tubes called ducts. These ducts lead to the nipple in the center of a dark area of skin called the areola. Fat fills the spaces between lobules and ducts. There are no muscles in the breasts, but muscles lie under each breast and cover the ribs. The breast consists of lobes, lobules, and bulbs all linked by thin tubes called ducts.

Benign breast disease is defined as breast lumps or abnormalities that have been examined and found not to contain cancer cells. It is estimated that each year in the USA alone, one million women are diagnosed with benign breast disease. For their study, Dr Lynn Hartmann, from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, and colleagues monitored more than 9000 women, between the ages of 18 and 85 years, who had received a diagnosis of benign breast disease from biopsies taken between 1967 and 1991. All benign breast samples were assigned to one of three categories â proliferative (fast growing), non-proliferative, or atypical (abnormal). In total, 30% of women had proliferative lumps, 67% had non-proliferative lumps and 4% had atypical lumps. Over an average 15-year follow-up period, 707 breast cancers developed among the women. After taking into account factors such as age and a family history of breast cancer, the researchers found that women with non-proliferative breast lumps â the most common type of benign breast disease â had no increased risk of developing breast cancer.

The glandular part of the breast includes the lobules and ducts. In women who are breast feeding, the cells of the lobules produce milk, which is then carried inside the ducts (milk passages) to the nipple. The support tissue of the breast includes fatty tissue and fibrous connective tissue (ligaments that support the breast). Any of these areas of the breast can undergo changes that cause you to have symptoms. The two main groups of breast changes are benign (not cancer) breast conditions and breast cancers. This document reviews the types of benign breast conditions. The most common benign breast conditions are fibrocystic change, benign breast tumors and breast inflammation

The tissue is clustered into lobes and each lobe has a duct that leads to the nipple. Breast tissue is sensitive to the normal hormonal cycles associated with the menstrual period. Breast changes, including fullness and tenderness, normally occur prior to the onset of the menstrual period and are caused by the hormonal fluctuations that occur late in the menstrual cycle. These symptoms usually subside spontaneously within 5-7 days of the onset of bleeding. Benign breast conditions refer to physical changes in the breast that are non-cancerous. The symptoms of benign conditions are often similar to those found in breast cancer and may cause great concern until evaluated and explained by a qualified health professional. Two of the most common benign breast conditions are Fibrocystic Breast Condition (FBC) and Fibroadenoma. Fibrocystic Breast Condition is the most common of the benign breast conditions. Fibrocystic breast changes occur in women between 20 and 50 years of age and subside with menopause. They are characterized by generalized tenderness and an uneven, bumpy texture caused by increased engorgement of the glands forming multiple small fluid-filled cysts clustered within the breast. Occasionally there is some spontaneous nipple discharge noted. Fibrocystic breast changes usually involve the entire breast but may be more severe in the upper, outer area of the breast. The symptoms may be present throughout the month but normally increase as the menstrual period approaches. It is estimated that 50% of American women may experience some fibrocystic breast changes at some time in their lives. FBC may affect one or both breasts and may change in severity from month to month.

Community 23/07/2005 20:53 -(SA) MOST women with breast lumps or other abnormalities that turn out to be non-cancerous do not face a substantially greater risk of developing breast cancer later, specially if they have little family history of the disease, a reassuring study found. However, certain "benign" growths are not so harmless and may be precursors to cancer, it also established. Women with these may want to consider surgery or the cancer drug Tamoxifen to lower their risk, doctors say. New England Journal of Medicine The information could be useful to many women. In a decade of having mammograms, one out of five women will have a biopsy, and most biopsies will reveal benign growths, two specialists wrote in an accompanying article. Overall, they are 56 percent more likely to develop cancer during the next 15 years, the study found - the same conclusion previous studies had reached, but the new work shows how much this risk varies - from very little to more than four times normal - depending on what the growths look like under the microscope.

That was years ago at a time before anyone talked about breast self-examination and before physicians checked our breasts for lumps routinely. I only found out that I had the lump because it hurt, not just to the touch, but constantly. I finally asked my family physician about it. He insisted that I must have injured my breast by falling on something. I was not convinced by his explanation, because I would have remembered the occurrence of such a painful injury. An x-ray revealed that the lump was not malignant. That was good news. It did, however, bother me constantly, and I was scheduled to have it removed surgically.
