Extractions: Overview Autism, also called infantile autism or autistic disorder, is a lifelong disorder that causes abnormal neurological development. It is one of five pervasive development disorders (PDDs) that also include Asperger disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, Rett disorder, and pervasive development disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS). Autism is usually diagnosed by the age of 3. Autism causes impaired social interaction, communication difficulties, and restricted or repetitive activities and interests. People with autism often exhibit abnormal responses to sensory stimulation (e.g., touch, sound, light), usually have moderate mental retardation, and have a higher risk for developing epilepsy. Some autistic patients exhibit aggression and self-injurious behavior (e.g., head banging, biting themselves).

Autism (say: aw -tih-zum) causes kids to experience the world differently from the way most other kids do. It's hard for kids with autism to talk with other people and express themselves using words. Kids who have autism usually keep to themselves and many can't communicate without special help. They also may react to what's going on around them in unusual ways. Normal sounds may really bother someone with autism - so much so that the person covers his or her ears. Being touched, even in a gentle way, may feel uncomfortable. Autistic kids often can't make connections that other kids make easily. For example, when someone smiles, you know the smiling person is happy or being friendly. But a kid with autism may have trouble connecting that smile with the person's happy feelings.

Extractions: Center for the Study of Autism, Salem, Oregon It has been over 50 years since Dr. Leo Kanner, a psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins University, wrote the first paper applying the term 'autism' to a group of children who were self-absorbed and who had severe social, communication, and behavioral problems. This paper provides a general overview of the complexity of this developmental disability by summarizing many of the major topics in autism. Prevalence For many years, the most cited statistic is that autism occurs in 4.5 out of 10,000 live births. This was based on large-scale surveys conducted in the United States and England. More recently, estimates on the prevalence of autism have ranged been as high as 1/4% to 1/2% of the population. These estimates typically include those with autism, Asperger syndrome, and PDD. Autism is three times more likely to affect males than females. This gender difference is not unique to autism since many developmental disabilities have a greater male to female ratio. Major characteristics Many autistic infants are different from birth. Two common characteristics they may exhibit include arching their back away from their caregiver to avoid physical contact and failing to anticipate being picked up (i.e., becoming limp). As infants, they are often described as either passive or overly agitated babies. A passive baby refers to one who is quiet most of the time making little, if any, demands on his/her parents. An overly agitated baby refers to an infant who cries a great deal, sometimes non-stop, during his/her waking hours. During infancy, many begin to rock and/or bang their head against the crib; but this is not always the case.

This is a web site which has been written by the parents of Zoe, an autistic child living in the UK, with a view to sharing as much practical knowledge as possible. Autism affects the whole family, and is a fact of life, something which is summed up by Zoe's brother Thomas (aged 12): Zoe is different to have around. I'm very close to her; I hate people taking the mickey out on her. She isn't very different to the world she just takes everything in her stride. She interprets everything in her own way but she'll get their in the end which is really all that matters. It does make me upset that she's different but she's treated as normal as possible and to me she's a normal sister. We started down the road of producing an autism site as far back as 1999. This is a short time, but in developmental terms, it is a very long time indeed. The emphasis of this site has shifted in that time, with a move away from fancy / slick menus and clever scripts towards a simplistic design which allows the focus to return to the content material, and practical information regarding autism. We do not delve too heavily onto the MMR as we do believe that there is already far too much opinion on the internet regarding the vaccination and quite a lot less hard fact.
