Canalization of the ectodermal cord begins during the third month in the area of the medial canthus. Canalization progresses toward the eyelid margin and toward the inferior meatus. The lacrimal puncta normally opens with eyelid separation during the seventh month of gestation. The distal lacrimal drainage system may not become patent until birth or shortly after birth. Blockage of the nasolacrimal system typically occurs in the distal portion where the tear duct opens into the nose beneath the inferior turbinate (Hasner valve). Because tears are not normally produced until a few weeks after birth, blockage of the lacrimal duct may not be recognized until several weeks after birth. Only about 1% to 6% of infants have symptomatic nasolacrimal duct obstruction. However, the majority of cases resolve by 1 year of age.

Meyer-Rüsenberg In a retrospective clinical study, 49 anophthalmos patients were examined, who during the period between 1989 and 1995 had been provided after enucleation with either a sclera-coated silicon (n=26) or hydroxyapatite spheres (n=23). Aim of the investigation was to enable a postoperative comparison between intensity of enophthalmos, motility of artificial eye and implantation, local findings of the microscopic slit-lamp examination, and subjective and objective tolerance. The average observation time was 4,2 years for silicon and 1,8 years for hydroxyapatite implantation. In contrast to the silicon implantation, there was significantly greater horizontal motility after hydroxyapatite implantation. Vertical motility and intensity of enophthalmos were not significantly divergent. Neither did the subjective satisfaction after questioning differ significantly in the statistics.
