Extractions: Newport Beach, California, 92660, USA Familial Multiple Lipomas This is a condition in which groups of fat cells in the subcutaneous tissues begin to grow spontaneously and produce multiple fatty lumps underneath the skin. These are benign fatty tumors or lipomas. This condition is quite common and is frequently genetic in origin, due to a mutation of the mitochondrial DNA. The presentation of this disease is variable. Most patients have multiple small fatty subcutaneous nodules that are painless. The number of nodules may vary from very few to many. They are mostly located on the arms, forearms, legs and trunk but they can occur in the neck, face and buttocks. In some patients, if neglected, these fatty lumps can grow to a large size and can make the patient appear grotesque. While these lumps are usually painless, in some patients they are painful and if large, they are subcategorized into an entity called . This disease was first described by Dr. F. X. Dercum in 1888, when he found a patient with large painful subcutaneous tumors. The correct medical term is called Adiposis Dolorosa. In this aspect of familial multiple lipomatosis, the fatty lumps are painful. The degree of pain varies from being mild to severe. The cause of the pain is unknown.

L ipomas are slow-growing, nearly always benign, adipose tumors that are most often found in the subcutaneous tissues. Most lipomas are asymptomatic, can be diagnosed with clinical examination (Table 1) and do not require treatment. These tumors may also be found in deeper tissues such as the intermuscular septa, the abdominal organs, the oral cavity, the internal auditory canal, the cerebellopontine angle and the thorax. Lipomas have been identified in all age groups but usually first appear between 40 and 60 years of age. Congenital lipomas have been observed in children. Some lipomas are believed to have developed following blunt trauma.

The presence of familial and nonfamilial multiple spindle cell lipomas within a single patient is a rare event, with only two reports in the current literature.

Equally plain is it there we have not myxoedema to deal with. ... It would seem, then, that we have here to deal with a connective-tissue dystrophy, a fatty metamorphosis of various stages of completeness, occurring in separate regions, or at best unevenly distributed and associated with symptoms suggestive of an irregular and fugitive irritation of the nerve-trunks possibly a neuritis Inasmuch as fatty swelling and pain are the most prominent features of the disease, I propose for it the name Adiposis Dolorosa." Esta enfermedad normalmente se asocia con obesidad, en mujeres postmenopausicas y a desfallecimiento y alteraciones mentales como la depresión, confusión, letargia, y demencia. Se desconoce la causa, y no existe tratamiento específico. El dolor se puede mitigar con esteroides, lidocaina intravenosa, o analgésicos. El tratamiento quirúrgico consiste en la escisión o liposucción de los bultos dolorosos. *Autor: Dr S. Aymé (Julio del 2002)*.

Extractions: Pain, definite or indefinite swellings or lipomas, weight gain of maybe 50%, fatigue, difficulty in walking. The disease occurs mainly among women and increases with age. In spite of the fact that the disease has been known and described for more than 100 years very little research is going on - a fact that must relate to the disease being so rare. The WHO system of diagnoses ICD-10 places it under the number E 88-2.

Extractions: Dr S Chidambaranathan Homeopathy Lipoma Fatty swelling There are many things in the world which are not fully understood. One among them in the medical world is lipoma. Lipoma is a benign (non-malignant or non-cancerous) tumour of adipose tissue (fat). It is a soft, localised, well circumscribed, painless swelling located mainly in the subcutaneous tissues (i.e. just under the skin) of the head, neck, shoulders, hands, legs and back. What is adipose tissue? Adipose tissues are nothing but fat. It is a combined product (esterification) of fatty acids (contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen) and glycerin. Humans are usually covered with adipose tissue as a blanket which gives beauty and keeps the body warm and soft. The adipose tissue not only functions as an insulating layer which prevents heat loss but also acts as a reservoir and source of energy release with fat metabolism. Extractions: DERCUMS DISEASE OR MORBUS (Mb) DERCUM A considerable amount of patients suffering from Mb Dercum have often met with pain during a long time, and also consulted several doctors before finally getting the correct diagnosis. Sometimes the diagnosis fibromyalghia has been made, but that disease causes an obvious soreness over certain so-called trigger points, symmetrically placed above the muscle attachments on both halves of the body. Mb Dercum, however, shows a marked soreness in the flesh in general, and specially in the adipose tissue of the upper arms, the inner thighs and knees, the outer thighs (so-called riding-breeches thighs), the belly and the behind. Therefore the name of fat tissue rheumatism (adiposis dolorosa) has been introduced. Besides, Dercum patients often suffer from extreme pain in the skeleton. Many women (only 5% men) have had to struggle to be believed, not the least by medical service and regional insurance offices. Why? The reason is that the medical service has strictly established routines into which you necessarily have to fit. In case your blood tests should show no abnormalities you will run the risk of being classified as mentally ill. The prescriptions given are often without any effect on these symptoms, and the Dercum patient will most likely be considered as a hypochondriac, burnt out, neurotic or some other suspicious diagnoses.

Extractions: Dercums Sjukdom eller Morbus (Mb) Dercum Summary : In contrast to fibromyalghia patients, who usually are normal-weight and whose pain originates from muscle bellies and tendon insertations, patients with morbus Dercum have their pain located mainly to the abundant adipose tissue and skeleton. The pain is very resistant to treatment. Liposuction induces a postoperative decrease of sensibility in treated areas. Inflammation plays a part in the syndrome. The inflammatory cell process is supported by increase of several plasma proteins. Adiposis dolorosa has a spectrum of associated systemic phenomena, e.g. chronic fatigue, sporadic bouts of low-grade fever, Sjögren-like dryness and swollen hands and feet. Placebo has no effect on the pain. Many patients have been subjected to mobbing from the health care system and insurance authorities in Sweden.
