The balance nerve runs beside the nerve of hearing and the facial nerve which controls movement of the facial muscles. There are two types of acoustic neurinomas: unilateral and bilateral. Unilateral acoustic neurinomas affect only one ear and account for approximately 8 percent of all tumors inside the skull. Facial nerve and/or trigeminal nerve symptoms develop in about 3 percent of AN patients.
