Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with cyclic vomiting syndrome is indexed in search engines, such as www.google.com or others, a non-systematic approach to Internet research can be not only time consuming, but also incomplete. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so. He has developed the style of "metaphysical art" and is seen as one of the forerunners of surrealism. Whereas current interpretations of his work by art historians and art critics focus on the literary and philosophical sources of de Chirico's poetics, e.g. the writings from Schopenhauer and Nietzsche , the British neurologist G.N. Fuller and the art historian M.V. Gale suggested, in a paper published as early as 1988 in the British Medical Journal, that migraine with aura may have acted as a basis for several unusual and recurrent features of his "Pittura metafisica". Reconsidering the notion of de Chirico's migraine aura as source of his artistic inspiration, Ubaldo Nicola and Klaus Podoll have systematically examined his published works as painter and writer, including his

There is a common misconception that a migraine headache is by definition severe. This is not the case. Differentiation between the different types of headaches is complex but generally does not involve the severity of pain (cluster headaches and those caused by intracranial disasters such as infection or bleeding being the exceptions.) The two most common types are tension headaches and migraine headaches. Briefly, tension headaches feel like a tight band symmetrically around the head and can last for days, whereas migraine headaches are a dull ache or throbbing pain, usually unilateral, sometimes preceded by an aura, that resolves in a few hours to a day or with sleep. Also, migraines frequently run in the family. I frequently get mild unilateral throbbing pains that resolve in a few hours or with sleep, and years ago I also thought I couldn't call them migraines since they don't hurt so bad. Then I got a tension headache. YEOW! My tension headaches hurt a lot worse than the mild migraines I frequently get! Give me a migraine any day. Jonathan R. The pain lasts only a few hours. Those afflicted with abdominal migraine are usually children, mostly girls with a family history of migraine. Like migraine headaches, the attacks of abdominal migraine are recurrent and are often accompanied by a headache. ACUPUNCTURE - acupuncture is an ancient Chinese remedy for a variety of illnesses. It is based on the theory that by stimulating nerves one can block pain. The puncture acts as a counterirritant to stop the painful impulses from radiating up the spinal cord. Some patients have responded to the use of acupuncture in headache treatment, but the overall results have been varied.

Without thinking much about it, most of us expect that doctors will be able to explain our aches, pains, and complaints by finding some sort of tissue damage or disease that causes our discomfort. Despite such expectations, many of us have learned that not all physical suffering can be neatly explained by a physical examination or by medical tests and procedures. Doctors call physical disorders that are real but not caused by tissue damage functional disorders. Children with recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) and their families struggle with this sometimes frustrating and confusing situation every day. The vast majority of children with RAP, probably over 90%, do not have a serious disease that could shorten their life or cause tissue damage to the gut or gastrointestinal system (meaning the esophagus or food tube, the stomach, and the intestines). In the absence of clues to serious disease like blood in bowel movements or vomit, low blood count (anemia), fevers, weight loss or poor growth, persistent vomiting, or pain that repeatedly awakens the child from sleep, children with RAP are especially unlikely to have a serious physical disease. What is functional recurrent abdominal pain (RAP)?
Extractions: AAFP Home Page Journals Vol. 59/No. 7 (April 1, 1999) More than one third of children complain of abdominal pain lasting two weeks or longer. The diagnostic approach to abdominal pain in children relies heavily on the history provided by the parent and child to direct a step-wise approach to investigation. If the history and physical examination suggest functional abdominal pain, constipation or peptic disease, the response to an empiric course of medical management is of greater value than multiple "exclusionary" investigations. A symptom diary allows the child to play an active role in the diagnostic process. The medical management of constipation, peptic disease and inflammatory bowel disease involves nutritional strategies, pharmacologic intervention and behavior and psychologic support. C hronic abdominal pain in children is defined as pain of more than two weeks' duration.

It's thought to be related to chemical changes in the body that affect the way blood vessels and nerve cells function in the brain. What are the symptoms? How is it treated? Further help There are two main types of migraine: Migraine without aura or "common" migraine Migraine with aura or "classical" migraine A migraine attack may start with subtle mood or behaviour changes, for example, unaccountable feelings of happiness or depression, or hunger cravings. In migraine with aura the headache may be preceded by visual or speech disturbance, muscle tingling or weakness, or numbness of the face and arms. The headache that follows is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting, and/or sensitivity to bright lights or noise. A migraine lasts from between four and 72 hours. There are also rare types of migraine that include hemiplegic migraine, retinal migraine, ophthalmoplegic migraine, and abdominal migraine. Another rare form of migraine is basilar artery migraine where symptoms such as dizziness, confusion and lack of balance are not always followed by headache.

Nicola: My 62 yr old mother has suffered from tinnitus intermittently over the last 15 years but it has become progressively worse over the last couple of years. It is not yet bad enough to merit the surgery available but it does affect her quality of life and sleep. Can you recommend any alternative therapies that might help her? Jan de Vries : Certainly when people get older and they have this particular problem, it does progressively get worse if they don't do anything about it. The best thing is to watch ones diet, especially the high protein foods and possibly eat natural carbohydrate foods. There are a number of very good remedies which can be used. One is Gingko Phytosome - twice a day capsules before meals and twice a day Hexa Niacine after meals. These are some very good remedies, it's also important to cut a few foods out such as salt, and dairy foods.
