To find the Roj and Mah for any day of the Gregorian Calendar see the link provided at the end of this article. The early progenitors of today's Zoroastrian community were nomads who had a keen perception of the seasonal changes and a deep respect for the elements of Nature. In their innate wisdom they chose to start the New Year on the day of Vernal Equinox (March 21), which marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Also, on this day the sun enters the constellation Aries and is directly over the equator making the day and night equal. Ancient Zoroastrians observed a 360 days Calendar of 12 months with each month comprising of 30 days. The months were named after seasonal festivals but the days of each month were merely numbered from one to thirty. New Year was celebrated on the day of Vernal Equinox and to keep the 360 days Calendar in harmony with the seasons, a thirteenth month was intercalated every six years. Since each year the spring season brings the resurgence of life in Nature, the first day of Spring was deemed to be the day of renewal, hope and joy and was celebrated as Noruz (New Day). In the middle of the fifth century BCE, during the Achamenian era, a distinctive 360 days Calendar was created. Each day (Roz) of the twelve months was assigned to an Amesha Spenta or Yazata; while all the months, except the first and tenth, were assigned to the Yazatas. The first month, Fravadin, was assigned to the Fravashis and the tenth month, Dae, was named for the Creator. Each month (Mah) was divided into four parts, which began with a day dedicated to the Creator.

THE ZOROASTRIAN PRIEST IN THE AVESTA © 1992 by Ali A. Jafarey(1) Zarathushtrian Ceremonies, a reconstruction based on the Gathas The Avesta remains the main source of our information. If not composed entirely by the priests, it has definitely been preserved by them alone. In fact, we owe the extant Avestaas our ancestors did for what is extinct nowwith its fair accuracy, to the sharp, faithful memory of the priests, and they deserve full credit for this. It should, therefore, speak about them more than any other professionals. However, we know that a part of the Avesta has been lost. We shall refer, if necessary, to Pahlavi writings to find the missing clues. Fortunately, the Denkard in Pahlavi of 9th century CE has left us with a fairly good list of the contents of the Sassanian collection of the twenty-one Avestan nasks. We have the Pahlavi commentaries of most of the Avestan passages which deal with the priestly class. In addition, the reports on Iranian priests left by Greek historians may also prove of some help. The terms used in the Avesta which could be translated as "priest" are numerous. The main term is

Produced by THINGS, Tel: 4138026/4128419. A religious calendar is important and necessary to sustain the beliefs and practices of any community. In Zoroastrianism, the calendar fulfils many important roles.
  • It helps one to follow the change of seasons and celebrate the religious festivals of the year.
  • It helps one to become ethically and ecologically more conscious of one's life and environment.
  • It helps one to understand and experience the principles of the religion in a more meaningful way.
  • It helps one to live a richer life on a spiritual, emotional and physical level. In Zoroastrianism, each day forms part of a month and as time is deemed to move on a linear scale, there is a belief in a beginning with a definite end of time. Thus a Zoroastrian, every year, moves closer towards the final goal, the "Making Wonderful" - when it is said that the whole of creation will be restored to a perfect state. Time, as we know it, will cease to exist and the world will be filled with total goodness, joy, peace and light. The first day of the month (hormazd roz ) will merge with the 30th day of Endless Light (Aneran roz ) into the ONE timeless moment, as a result of the total annihilation of evil from this world. The seven creations comprising of the sky, waters, earth, plants, cattle, man and fire will be restored to a deathless, immortal state - the total triumph of Hormazd.

We have been rated a Welcome to the Stanford University Zoroastrian Group's World Wide Web home page. Our first year of re-existance at Stanford was a very interesting one. The high point, of course, was the Seventh North American Zoroastrian Youth Conference (ZYC '95). Held here at Stanford over the 4th of July weekend, the congress was attended by more than 300 Zoroastrian youths (age 13 - 45) from the US and Canada; youths from a few other countries outside North America, including England and Australia, were also able to join us. You can find more information on the congress in the Sunday, July 2nd edition of the San Jose Mercury News. This year we plan to be a bit more active on campus. We'd also like to increase our interaction with other student groups. If you'd like to contact us, please email Maneck Bhujwala at:
