[Yazidi] Hell's Angels
The Independent, UK Nov. 29, 2003 infobrix.yellowbrix.com Yazidi ReligionNewsBlog.com Scorned as `Devil worshippers', Iraq's Yezidi tribe have survived centuries of abuse. But could the overthrow of Saddam Hussein provide their greatest challenge yet? Don't even mention the word Satan," we were warned before we went to Sinjar. "If you even say that word there, they will make serious trouble for you." That seemed a little strange, as the people we were going to visit are a religious community persecuted across the Middle East as Devil-worshippers. It does not take long to find unusual-looking people in Sinjar, a pleasant town of old stone buildings under a barren mountain ridge. There are old men with their hair woven into long plaits on either side of their heads, who look like nothing so much as Asterix and Obelix. Others wear huge, bushy, untrimmed moustaches and strange, conical caps. These are the Yezidi, wrongly called the Devil- worshippers, Iraq's most bizarre, and most persecuted minority. The overthrow of the Saddam Hussein regime has opened the Yezidi to the outside world in a way they have not known for years. The Yezidi sound like the stuff of legend, or 19th-century novels - a people who live in the remote mountains at the borders of Turkey and Iraq, and pray to the fallen angel Christians and Muslims call Satan, because they believe he was forgiven by God and reinstated in heaven.

4 February 2000, Volume 3, Number 5 U.S. CONCERNED ABOUT IRAQI WEAPONS BUILDUP. Iraq has been rebuilding the military and industrial sites which had been damaged by American and British air strikes in late 1998, according to "The New York Times" of 1 February. American officials, the article says, are concerned about the absence of international weapons inspectors. Intelligence reports, the "Times" says, have provided no concrete evidence that Iraq is building biological or chemical weapons. But these reports have raised the possibility of renewed military confrontation, because the administration has repeatedly warned that any effort by Iraq to produce the weapons would prompt new American air strikes. The bombing of Iraq that began 13 months ago set back Iraq's ability to produce chemical and biological weapons, and the missiles needed to launch them, by one to two years, according to senior commanders.

"...the stormiest and most controversial early movements within Sufism were led by Husayn ibn Mansur Haflaj (crucified AD 922),'Ain al-QudAt Hamaddni (crucified AD 1131), and Shahâb al-Din Suhrawardi (crucified AD 1191).
"Hamaddni's idea of successive reincarnation, and the redemption of Lucifer, added to his other non-Islamic preachings, qualified him for burning on a cross by the Muslim authorities when he was 33. Al Hallâj claimed himself to be an avatar of the divinity...and that all creatures are ultimately the manifestations of the same original Universal Spirit. He thus also declared Lucifer to have been redeemed and elevated to the highest universal station, as in Yezidism. He was subjected to exquisite tortures before being crucified in Baghdad. At present there is a shrine dedicated to Hallâj in the sacred Yezidi religious center and shrine complex at Lâlish, next to the tomb of Shaykh Adi."

The Yezidis Probably descendants of the ancient fire-magicians, though the Persians claim that ancient Persian Yezidis were led to Persia from Basrah by their Prophet, Iezed. They are now regarded as Devil-worshipers or Shaitan-worshipers, centered in the mountains and deserts of Kurdistan, Armenia, Persia, Turkestan, Syria, Mesopotamia and environs. For this reason, the Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran recently put thousands of Yezidi to death perhaps all of them. Grant feels their cult goes back to Sumeria, but connects the word to Yesod. It is also the religion that Crowley took for his own cult of Shaitan-Aiwass, after ridding it of latterday Xtian influences. Gurdjieff describes the Yezidis as a simple, superstitious people, easily hypnotized, but he began his search amongst them for the fabled "Sarmoung" monastery (branches of which are scattered between Mesopotamia and the Northern Himalayas, which it is believed he eventually found and where he received his most important training). Originally they were said to summon the lowers demons and elementals, fully acknowledging the evil of the King of the "Black Powers," who opposes Allah. But their rationale is that one day Allah and Shaitan will reconcile their differences and those who have shown disrespect for Shaitan will then suffer for it, bringing both God and Devil after them. Like the Eskimos the Yezidis believed, as HPB quotes, "Keep friends with the demons; give them your property, your blood, your service, and you need not care about God - he will not harm you!" (God is perfect, therefore not a threat, but demons are imperfect, and so, unpredictable).

Lost in Translation
Yezdinar Village, Iraq
Dohuk is a welcoming place. After walking or taking taxis inside and around the city for two days, I covered enough ground and talked with enough people to see that while the welcome is clear for American, British, and other visitors, troublemakers can expect an entirely different greeting. People in Dohuk say they have no intentions of going back, or of carrying useless boulders from the past as they move forward.
After being in a war zone for nearly half a year, a few days in Dohuk becomes a chance to reconnect with civilized society, bustling with a people in hurried pursuit of progress. Seeing a little girl tucked away in a corner of her family's stall in the marketplace, absorbed in a book she’s reading about the solar system, it's easy to peek over her shoulder and peer into her imagination, and see it take her into space as Iraq's first astronaut. In her young life, never having known the fiery cage of war, the possibilities are still limitless.
Two Kids: One Bright Future
I had been hearing about the Yezidi people who live in villages near Dohuk. Followers of an ancient religion, whose proponents claim it is the oldest in the world, there are thought to be about a half million Yezidis, living mostly in the area of Mosul, with smaller bands in forgotten villages scattered across Northern Iraq, Syria, Turkey and other lands. Saddam had labeled the Yezidis "Devil Worshippers," a claim I'd heard other Iraqis make, but no source offered substantiation. I wanted to know more.

THE YEZIDI VIEW OF GOD
It is not easy to discover whether the conception of God, which exists to-day among the Yezidis, however shadowy, has come from Mohammedan or Christian sources, or whether it comes from that primitive stage where the worship of God and of inferior deities exists side by side. One thing, however, is apparent, and that is that the Yezidi notion of God does not seem to be influenced by any "positive religion" p. 146 p. 147 the affairs of the world, except once a year, on New Year's day, when he sits on his throne, calls the gods unto him, and delivers the power into the hands of the

CHAPTER I
THE RELIGIOUS ORIGIN OF THE YEZIDIS
The origin of the devil-worshippers has been the subject of much controversy; but aside from an expression of views, no satisfactory solution of the problem has as yet been reached. The different theories which have been advanced may be classified under four general heads: The Myth of the Yezidis themselves; the tradition of Eastern Christians; the dogmatic idea of the Mohammedan scholars; and the speculative theory of the western orientalists.
I
THE YEZIDI MYTH
The Myth of the Yezidis concerning their origin may be derived from three different sources: from their sacred book, from the appendix of the manuscript, and from actual conversation of travellers with them or with natives dwelling among them. One p. 90 i.e. i.e. p. 91 There, it is said, Adam miraculously gave birth to a son. Distressed by this incident, Eve asked God that she might find favor in her husband's eyes by giving birth to a child. Thereupon, it continues, she begat a very pretty daughter. Attracted by her beauty, Adam married her to his son. Now, the Yezidis, we are told, are the blessed seed of these two children. The rest of mankind, however, are from the seed of Ham, who

Peoples and Cultures The Yezidis An Angelic Sect

Dr. Orville Boyd Jenkins I sometimes get enquiries concerning the Yezidi people, associated with the Kurds. Some are puzzled when they cannot find the name Yezidi on a list of peoples. Angelic Cults
The Yezidis may not show up on a peoples list, because they are a religious sect. The ones I know of are mostly Kurds, but there are Yezidis of other ethnicities also, according to various sources. (Refer to some of the linked websites at the end of this article.) One Yezidi has declared to me that all Yezidis are Kurds. The Yezidis are one sect of a group of religions called The Cult of the Angels, or Yazdani . The word Yezidi also appears as Yazidi and the religion is referred to as Yezidism Yazidi is obviously one form of the name Yazdani Yazdan is also the Yezidi name for the Supreme Being. Alevi
There are two other major sects of the Yazdani. Most widely known is the Alevi or Alawi (from the name Ali), also called Nusayri (from the name Nazareth, related to Jesus as one of the avatars of the deity), or Qizilbash (meaning "Redheads," from a warrior group in medieval times so called because they wore red headdresses. The Alevi are quite well known, because most of the Dimila (Dimili) Kurds are Alevi. The Arab Alawi in Syria are a branch of the same Alevism, Alawi being the Arabic form of the word and Alevi coming from the Turkish pronunciation.

More Yezidis
For those interested in Yezidis, KurdishMedia.com recently ran this report on Yezidis in the Caucasus, and a three part series ( here here and here . It's easy to be skeptical of a statement like this one (in the first part of the series): It is well known that Yezidism, or Zoroastrianism, being one of the oldest religions of the Middle East, has greatly influenced the history of mankind. First, I suppose, because some scholars regard Yezidis as being primarily Islamic heretics or syncretists combining Muslim, Christian and some Zoroastrian elements rather than Zorastrians proper (I wrote quoted one author making that argument here , although note well the comments, most of which take issue with the essay quoted.) A second reason for skepticism, of course, is that it's hard to credit Zoroastrianism with much of an influence on the history of mankind, especially if one compares it to Judaism, Christianity or Islam. Yet Zoroastrian influence may well explain some aspects of our Judeo-Christian religious heritage, including the evolution of Satan from an aspect of God to his antagonist (this view, of course, is much debated). Those who have spent the night there also claim the entire area is "bathed in a strange bluish grey light." "Apparitions" are also seen. (The above information was taken from the book "Psychic Warrior" by David Moorehouse). The author was a US Army soldier who was hit in the head by a mortar shell while camping with his platoon in that valley and experienced psychic phenomena and abilities he never had before the incident. He was eventually assigned to the US Army Psychic Warfare Dept. Each tower is topped by a brilliant heliographic reflector, and was intended to serve as a power house from where a Satanic/Yezidi Priest could beam his will to influence events in the world. The Yezidis have often been described as a secretive people who are not permitted to reveal their religion to outsiders, they keep their real beliefs hidden. Modern Yezidism has changed somewhat from the old ways due to outside interference. The Yezidi people have been severely persecuted and are very suspicious of outsiders. It is obvious their doctrines have been altered to conform to xian beliefs as in the Qu’ret Al Yezid, Satan dictates he is a God and in other places it reads he is an “archangel.” Satan dictated the Al Jilwah directly to Yezidi prophet Sheik Adi in the 12th century. The Al Jilwah is the most important doctrine in Satanism and every Satanist should be familiar with its teachings. I asked Satan if the Al Jilwah was from him and he confirmed it was, but stated that the Muslims altered some of the Yezidi doctrines.

Cult of Angels Most non-Muslim Kurds follow one of several indigenous Kurdish faiths of great antiquity and originality, each of which is a variation on and permutation of an ancient religion that can loosely be labeled the "Cult of Angels," in Kurdish. The actual name of the religion is all but lost to its modern followers, who retain only the names of its surviving denominations. The name is a variation of the Kurdish name of one of its isolated branches, Yezidism, which is the name given by this religion to its pre-eternal, all-encompassing deity, the Universal Spirit. A brief argument in favor of the former view is presented in this section under Yezidism. Alevism now also encompasses Nusayrism, which is followed primarily by a minority of Arabs in Syria and most of the Arab minority in Turkey. All denominations of the Cult, past and present, hold a fundamental belief in luminous, angelic beings of ether, numbering seven, that protect the universe from an equal number of balancing dark forces of matter. Another shared belief, and a cornerstone of the Cult, is the belief in the transmigration of souls through numerous reincarnations, with reincarnations of the deity constituting major and minor avatars. The Cult believes in a boundless, all encompassing, yet fully detached "Universal Spirit"
