(London, Routledge, 2002, 144 pp., ISBN 415 26283 6) This text provides a clear and comprehensive introduction to the history of religion in China and Taiwan today. Using a descriptive and original approach, the author focuses on the four main traditions: Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and popular/folk religion. Tracing common themes, such as ancestor worship, sacrifice and divination, he highlights the ways in which religion has responded to and influenced political and cultural change in China.
Adrian, Bonnie. FRAMING THE BRIDE. Globalizing beauty and romance in Taiwan's bridal industry,. (Berkeley, University of California Press, 2004, 306 pp., ISBN 520 23834 6) An absorbing consideration of contemporary bridal practices in Taiwan, the book shows how the lavish photographs represent more than mere conspicuous consumption. They are artifacts infused with cultural meaning and emotional significance, products of the gender- and generation-based conflicts in Taiwan's hybrid system of modern matrimony.

Jesus Christ through Buddhist Eyes
Christ as the Truth, the Light, the Life, but a Way?
Bokin Kim
A conservative Korean Presbyterian pastor asks me what I know about Christ. He asks again what a Buddhist can know about Christ. He claims that Christ cannot be understood from the other aspects of view, but only from the Christian view. Then do I know at all about Christ? My Buddhist understanding of Christ does not start with how Christ has been understood in the Christian context. My understanding is based on the reading of the Christian scripture. My reading of the scripture is guided by Sot'aesan's understanding of Christianity. According to my reading, the Bible presents two meanings of Christ: Christ in the transhistorical sense and Christ in the historical sense. The meaning of Christ as the Truth, the Light, and the Life represents a Christ in the transhistorical sense. The meaning of Christ as a way represents a Christ in the historical sense. Because Jesus did not make any distinction or clarification between these two meanings, it is obvious that even the Christian tradition has confusion on the meaning of Christ. As a result, most Christians hold to an exclusive view of Christ that claims his uniqueness. My attribution of two meanings of Christ is derived from a similar distinction in Buddhism. Buddha in the transhistorical sense represents the universal nature of Buddha, which is identical with Truth.

NEW YEAR GREETING Composed by - Thong-in Soonsawad The festivities herald the dawning of the New Year; May Lord Buddha be with you? May your body and mind retain their youthful vigor? May your thoughts transcend your problems through the year? Your patience will be rewarded by peace of mind, And your obstacles fade as quickly as the morning dew, Surrender the things of youth gracefully, Hurry, build economy to make an income, And good health and long life be your reward, Face only purity, prettiness, brightness; May your complexion remain as smooth as silk, Through the eyes and mind of your admirers? Your new and old experience will be enhanced by your participation; Beware of your limitations and often search for reality; The expectant anticipation of sensual pleasure looms in the mind; Know the value, know the rising and ceasing of all beings. Endeavors new, replace the old; Elevating fortune and status together bring a new honorable dimension; Progression through good deeds and intellectual pursuits Are rewarding in mind and spirit May the cosmic force inspire you to the unlimited possibilities that exist

Introduction Judith Hertz
Co-Chair Commission on Interreligious Affairs, Union of American Hebrew Congregations, Member of the Coordinating Council, Women's Program World Conference of Religions for Peace This seminar is part of the 55th annual Department of Public Information conference for non- governmental organizations at the United Nations. This conference aims to educate NGO's about the United Nations System and thereby to help NGO's fulfill their organizational or institutional mandate. This UN DPI-NGO Conference is titled "Rebuilding Societies Emerging from Conflict: A Shared Responsibility". This afternoon our theme is Women, Religion and (In)Security. The underlying mandate of the UN is peace and security - building peace and security, maintaining peace and security. When the UN was established in the 1946 women and gender were not an issue. Today the special issues of women - as well as the role of religion are recognized as significant and important. The majority of conflicts or wars today are intra-state, within one country. Women are often the primary victims (among the non-military) and often the primary protectors or coping agents at the grassroots level. Religion is invariably implicated in one way or the other in these intra-state conflicts. This afternoon's panel is sponsored by two units of the World Conference of Religions for Peace. The Women's Program and the Program on Disarmament and Security have joined together to present this session on ways religion may be mobilized in the service of securing and maintaining peace.

Although there were earlier immigrants to the U.S., Korean immigration to the U.S. is widely accepted as having begun January 13, 1903, when laborers arrived in Hawaii to work on sugar plantations. More began arriving after the passage of the Immigration Act of 1965.

Review The government should accept the proposal of 'President's Advisory Sustainable Development Committee' that demanded suspension of the Saemankeum reclamation project. The Life and Peace Alliance for the Saemankeum Tidal Flat (Saemamkeum Alliance), representative, Father Kyuhyun Moon, who is on a 5 day hunger strike, believes that the government should accept the advice of the 'President's Advisory Sustainable Development Committee' on the Saemankeum project which was reported to President, Kim Daejeung yesterday and released to the press today. The committee supports the opinion of many experts and environmental groups who have been against the Saemankeum project. Those who are undertaking this project are under-estimating the value of tidal flat ecosystem and potential damage to water quality. Therefore, the committee suggests a suspension of the project. The Saemankeum Alliance asks President Kim Daejung to accept the advice of the Sustainable Development Committee and halt the Saemankeum project. We believe that the continuation of the Saemankeum project will result in social conflict because of the general population's concern over the ecological damage. The benefits of Saemankeum project are far out weighted by the cost to the environment and the local community. The arguments for the project based on food security, value of tidal flat, water policy, and economic estimation have proved to be unfounded. The announcement by the Sustainable Development Committee is only confirms this.

Professor of Korean Literature, Kwang-woon University Throughout history, a new religion, regardless of its kind, is known to aim at the outset for the abolition of injustice and the liberation of humanity. Lamentably, however, we find that in almost every case with the passage of time the religion itself settles into yet another system of oppression, supporting those oppressive systems in existence. It is also true that in Korea the established religions, coupled with the patriarchal tradition of Confucian culture, have discharged a role of sustaining, rather than elimination, discrimination against women.
In Korea the major religions are Buddhism, Confucianism, Christianity(Catholic and Protestant), and such indigenous religions as Won Buddhism, Chondo-kyo (Religion of Heaven's Way), and Chungsan-kyo (Religion of Chungsan).
There is some argument as to whether Confucianism is a religion at all. At any rate, confucian teachings came to Korea by the third century the latest, and with the founding of Yi Dynasty(1392) became a kind of state religion. Since the middle of that Dynasty (around the sixteenth century) Confucianism has taken root as the pervading ideology of Korean culture. While the extent of sexism in the original confucian teachings remains debatable, it is undeniable that Confucianism has provided the chief ideological support of patriarchy in Korean society both in the traditional and modern periods.

    Buddhism and Peace
Dr. P.K. Sundaram Prof. of Philosophy, University of Madras
The Buddha's feeling of torment was concerning the malady of mankind. This malady afflicts it in three directions:
  • Man versus nature Man versus Man Man versus himself
  • The last is the first logically in so far as, once this predicament is settled, the other battles are automatically won. Buddhist ethics have come to be known as psychological only for this reason. The innermost depths of human personality are measured and the forces molding the thoughts and attitudes are laid bare by Buddhism so that moral behaviour could be mastered and perfected. Knowledge and will are the twin sides of the same coin. False knowledge and perverse will are the sources of pain and suffering. Mind must be trained both in the matter of intuiting the truth and of the conquering the passions. Impermanence is built into the very structure of the world. Change is the very stuff of reality. Nothing is an exception to this law. Holding onto things under the delusion that things will endure causes suffering when they pass away in spite of one's best wishes and efforts. Right knowledge and belief in impermanence save us from the delusion of permanence and consequent despair.
