Emporer: I have richly endowed the Buddhist religion so how much merit would you say I have gained. Bodhidharma: No merit whatsoever. The Emporer was somewhat taken aback, having heared that good begets good and evil begets evil - the Law of Karma. What Bodhidharma was trying to convey was that the Emporer's intention was wrong and it is the intention that determines the Karmic effect. The Emporer's intention was not altruistic giving but more for his own gain or to boost his own ego. The Emporer then asked Bodhidharma, "What then is the essence of Buddhism?". Bodhidharma replied, "No essence whatsoever" The Emporer, somewhat confused said, Since you say that in Buddhism, all things have no essence, who then is speaking before me now?" Bodhidharma replied, "I don't know". Thus, after China had its first initiation into Cha'an teaching, the thoroughly confused Emporer Wu-ti dismissed the monk. Most of the disciples felt that the one to inherit the Patriarchy would be their instructor Shen Hsiu, so they left it to him to write the stanza. Shen Hsiu was worried that any stanza he might write might expose him to the Master as lacking in understanding. He chose the dead of night to secretly write his stanza on a wall where the Master would pass by and see it. If the Master expressed delight at the stanza, he would admit to being its author otherwise he decided to remain silent.

(There is a temple and an "Institute" just outside of Philly were I lived at the time) I'm really taken with it. It's a mixture of Zen, Pure Land, Confucianism, Taoism, and some Korean folk religion. Everything gets reorganized, so it really is a new religion, but it's still Buddhist at its core.
you can find more about it here:

Does anyone have an thoughts or experience with this school? MuHak Jun 16 2005, 06:20 AM Cool. It looks like a legitimate religion. I've never heard of it even though I just took a Korean Religions class. In the meantime, check out Seon Buddhism. Seon is the Korean pronunciation of the Chinese Ch'an. I am curious if "Won" is spelled the same way as the Korean unit of money, the won. It's hard to tell what the true pronunciation of romanized Korean or Chinese words is; it's much easier with Japanese (but now I'm just rambling). No 2 Jun 16 2005, 07:01 AM

The Family in Buddhism
Spiritual Clarity and Discrimination Build on Strong Family Principles
By Rev. Park Chung-soo , Gangnam Branch Temple, Seoul A family consists of a married couple and their children. It is a group of people tied by the same blood. We are a member of a family from the time of our birth until our death. The relationship between the members of a family is based on love and trust, and the whole group forms the most basic and oldest unit of society. It is the oldest in that it has always existed throughout history, although there have been changes due to the influence of society. As the members of a family live together, they evolve a common ideology and value system. Thus they cooperate and understand each other, all working towards a common goal. The most remarkable aspect of this cooperation is the economic one. The basic couple forms an economic unit and share their income with the group. A family has a strong feeling of "we" which is the result of deeply internalized emotional satisfaction of the family. While pursuing a common goal through common values, a family tradition is born, and so the family becomes a cultural group. The personality of each member of the family is built up within this framework and so creates the foundation of human development. The ups and downs of a family depend on the head, whether they follow a matriarchal system or a patriarchal one. Great Master Sotaesan, the founder of Won Buddhism, declared that the essential ways to regulate the home are:1

Buddha's Stones: A Stacking Comparative When Chambers was living in South Korea, he traveled to the Buddhist temples on numerous occasions, and became interested in Buddhist philosophy (quotes follow). He also noticed a unique practice of stacking stones as a form of worship and asking for good fortune. He decided to document this behavior, and compare these stone formations as a study in technique, and to pay tribute to those Korean people involved with this form of religion. "As material civilization develops, cultivate spiritual civilization accordingly." "All are incarnations of truth-Buddha, do each thing as an offering of worship to the Buddha." "Practice meditation continually, practice meditation everywhere." "Keep such oneness in motion and in quietness, maintain the full oneness of the spirit and the body." "Buddhist truth is found in life, life is Buddhist truth itself." (‘The Scripture of Won Buddhism’, Pal Khn Chon, The Commemorating Commission for Sacred Achievements of the Great Master of Won Buddhism, Won Kwang Publishing Co., Iri, The Republic of Korea, 1988)
The above statements are the foundation for Buddhism, and multitudes of people flock to the temples in South Korea to worship and practice such; and some stack stones. This stacking of stones is a recent practice, and is probably due to monks stacking stones, as well, in the past. This practice is probably a form of worshipping, but it’s mainly a gesture of asking or wishing for good fortune to be bestowed on the stacker and his/her family. Each stone within the stack represents a particular wish and possibly, family member.

Residents Shamanism is the most ancient and traditional belief of the Korean people, on the basis of which foreign religions such as the Buddhism, Confucianism, Protestantism and Catholicism found wide acceptance and proliferated very dynamically. Today, the Buddhism, Protestantism and Catholicism constitute the majority of Korea' s active religion, while Confucianism governs the way of everyday life and thought of the people with its deep roots in the Korean culture. About 40 percent of Koreans nationwide are followers of Buddhism and another 35 percent are Protestants. In Seoul, however, the composition differs somewhat to break into a population that is 49.8% Protestant, 28.4% Buddhist, and 14.8% Catholic. There currently are 5,959 Protestant churches, 1,107 Buddhist temples and 176 Catholic churches in Seoul.
Shamanism Shamanism is the oldest, aboriginal belief of Koreans. It is a form of polytheism based on the belief that spirits dwell in nature, home and every object around us and should thus be propitiated to avert the bad luck and assure a happy life. This belief still persists and a surprising number of Koreans go to the fortuneteller when they have to make an important decision whatsoever.

Korean Buddhism at the Crossroads (Interview)
KOREAN BUDDHISM AT THE CROSSROADS
by Dr Frank M. Tedesco
In conjunction with Wesak 2001, BGF invited Dr Frank M. Tedesco, a well-known social activist and expert on Korean Buddhism, to Malaysia for a series of dharma talks. He gave talks at the Kota Kemuning Buddhist Center in Shah Alam, Buddhist Maha Vihara in Kuala Lumpur, BGF Center in Petaling Jaya, Than Hsiang Temple in Penang, and Jitra Buddhist Association in Jitra, Kedah. Loh Kea Yu spoke to Frank about the challenges facing modern Korean Buddhism just before a pot-luck dinner and talk at the Kota Kemuning Buddhist Center in Shah Alam on the evening of May 6, 2001 which was also Wesak eve. Those interested to know more about Buddhism in Korea can access the web-site www.buddhapia.com/eng. 1. You are an authority on Korean Buddhism. What started you on this journey into Buddhism, and specifically Korean Buddhism? 2. Many people are familiar with Japanese Buddhism and Chinese Buddhism. Could you tell us briefly what is Korean Buddhism? Well, Korean Buddhism is Chinese scripture-based Mahayana Buddhism. Buddhism came to Korea from north China in the latter half of the fourth century C.E. Each of the three kingdoms into which the Korean peninsula was divided embraced the new religion. All the major doctrinal systems of Mahayana Buddhism of 5th - 7th century India and China flowed into Korea and were eagerly studied by Korean monks. With the consolidation of the three kingdoms of Koguryo, Paekche and Shilla in 680 CE, Unified Shilla Buddhist thought reached its apogee as the integrating paradigm and ideology, producing such eminent Korean monks such as Wonhyo (617-686), Uisang (625-702),), and Wonch'uk (613-696).
