Next by Alisogbo Akinyele Umoja The concept of Vodun is thousands of years old, born from the ancient peoples of West Afrika. In the 18th century, a Dahomean King, Agaja Trudo, began to consolidate the dieties of various clans and villages of West Afrika to form a comprehensive theological and spiritual system of Vodun. Agaja sought to develop a comprehensive Vodun system to save his kingdom from the crisis (MAAFA) that was devastating West Afrika.
At the same time, in the French colony of Saint Dominique (Haiti) various Afrikan ethinics there developed a comprehensive belief system, Voodoo. Haitian Voodoo recognized the unique ethnic heritages of Afrika, while uniting captive Afrikans around the new reality as a New Afrikan people in the western hemisphere. Voodoo was a motivating force of the Haitian revolution and remains a means of social organization and survival for the Haitian masses today.
Similiar to Haitian Voodoo, New Afrikan Vodun seeks to develop a common system for New Afrikans in the united states, inclusive of the Deities and rites of our Ancestors throughout West Afrika (Evhe/fon, Nago/Yoruba, Akan, Kongo, etc.) Rather than retribalize Afrikans who came to north america through the MAAFA, New Afrikan Vodun seeks to develop a diversified unity of New AFrikan people.

La Religione Vodun - Voodoo
Credenze Vodun o Voodoo

http://dickinsg.intrasun.tcnj.edu/diaspora/caribe.html
SUMMARY OF AFRICAN RELIGIONS IN THE CARIBBEAN
Matthew Middleton The rich cultural tapestry of African religion spread to all parts of the New World, including the Caribbean basin . The most obvious example of this influence is found on the small, impoverished island of Haiti. The poorest nation in the world, Haiti maintains a strong cultural heritage centered on their religion of Vodun . Most Westerners mistake Vodun for Voodoo; while the latter is based on the former, Voodoo is largely a creation of American Hollywood and has no real following in Haiti. Vodun, by contrast, is the primary religion of the island and has roots in several other Caribbean nations such as Benin and the Dominican Republic. Vodun stretches all the way to the Haitian neighborhoods of New York City. The word "vodun" is traced from an African word for "spirit." Vodun weaves together different strands of Roman Catholicism, Dahomey, Yoruba and Kongoese religious beliefs. The gods of Vodun parallel the saints of the Roman Catholic Church, for example. In Vodun, all the universeslight and dark, god and manare interconnected in a natural balance. There are hundreds of minor spirits which control everything from rainbows to forests to healing. Vodun consists of many elaborate ceremonies and rituals, several of which involve blood sacrifice. Equally important, Vodun has sparked a tradition of art and architecture in many Caribbean countries.

THE VODUN (VOODOO) RELIGION
General Background
Vodun or Sevi Lwa is commonly called Voodoo or Voudou by the public. The name comes from an African word for "spirit". Vodun's roots go back to the West African Yoruba people who lived in 18th and 19th century Dahomey. That country occupied parts of today's Togo, Benin and Nigeria. Slaves brought their religion with them when they were forcibly shipped to Haiti and other islands in the West Indies. Today over 60 million people practice Vodun worldwide. Religious similar to Vodun can be found in South America where they are called Umbanda, Macumba, Quimbanda or Candomble . It is widely practiced in Benin. Although it was suppressed during the Marxist regime, it has been allowed to be practiced freely since a democratic government was installed there in 1989. Vodun was formally recognized by the Government of Benin in 1996-FEB. It is also followed by most of the adults in Haiti. It can be found in many of the large cities in North America, particularly in the American South. Today, there are two virtually unrelated forms of the religion:

Vodun
Vodun (aka Vodoun Voudou Voodoo Sevi Lwa ) is a syncretist religion that originates in West Africa with the Yoruba people[?] . The name Vodun is derived from the local african word for spirit , and can be traced about 6,000 years back. Today, Vodun is practised in Benin , the Dominican Republic Ghana Haiti and Togo The majority of the Africans who were brought to Haiti and the southern US as slaves were from West Africa, and their descendants are the primary practitioners of Vodun. The survival of the belief system in the New World is remarkable, although the traditions have changed. One of the largest differences however between African and American Voudun is that the African slaves of Haiti and the southern US were obliged to dress up their gods ( Lwas ) and spirits as Roman Catholic saints The majority of speculation as to why this was done is that it was an attempt to disguise their " pagan " religion from their masters who had forbidden them to practice it. To say that Voudun is simply a mix of West African religions with a veneer of Roman Catholicism would not be entirely correct. This would be ignoring numerous influences from the native Arawak Indians, as well as the evolutionary process that Voudun has undergone shaped by the volatile ferment of Haitian history. It would also be ignoring the large influence of
