VINEYARD Gladstone Vineyard is one of the most beautiful vineyards in New Zealand. It is a small but growing (see our new winery development) owner-operated winery in the Wairarapa region of New Zealand, currently producing about 3,500 cases of wine, increasing to 7,500 in the next three to four years. Established in 1986, vines are planted on a free draining terrace, once the river bed of the nearby Ruamahanga River. There are 10 acres of vines on our home block at Gladstone, and a further 25 acres of vines at our Dakins Road block 3 kms north on the river terraces. Our focus is to make quality wine, which is sought after, both here and overseas. Close attention to detail in the vineyard and the winery by all our staff results in wine for the premium end of the market. Our principal varieties are Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon. Our newest wine is a Pinot Noir. Christine and David Kernohan took over the vineyard in February 1996. Both were born in Glasgow, Scotland and emigrated to New Zealand 26 years ago. Christine is the winemaker, involved in all stages of the activities, and manages the business. Christine is one of only three Scottish women winemakers in the world (it not being a common career aspiration when she grew up!) David runs his own business, Architecture Diagnostics, from the vineyard, and spends his weekends serving wine!
