The Universal Buddhist Congregation (UBC), which meets in East Boston, was started in 1985 by Rev. Thich Giac Duc, who is the spiritual leader of the community. The extended community consists of between 2,000 and 3,000 people, with 50 attending services on an average day. Young people are a focus of this community, and it is not unusual for half of those gathered to be children and teenagers. There are activities for the youngsters after the Sunday services, which are held on the fully renovated first floor which includes a large hall, a kitchen and a dining room. The youth are part of the International Buddhist Youth, an organization started in the 1930s, which has over 20,000 members in the United States, and three million around the world. The Universal Buddhist Congregation is unique in that the monks are allowed to marry. They observe the same vows as other monks, except that abstention from sex becomes fidelity in marriage. The UBC believes that married monks can be closer to the people, that sexual desires can be overcome with meditation and do not preclude marriage, and that marriage and procreation are important for some monks as well as for lay people. Contact: Mr. Tan Nguyen on Sunday between 10:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M.

    Buddhism in Norway
History of Buddhism in Norway Archaeological evidence shows that the Vikings brought a statue of the Buddha to Scandinavia, but nothing suggests that Buddhism had any impact in this part of the world until the late 19th century when it became known to educated people in Western Europe through the writings of scholars and philosophers. During the 20th century various Eastern-inspired spiritual movements lead to an interest in Buddhism among a number of Norwegians. The fascination with Tibet, created by books on this topic translated into Norwegian, also contributed to the attraction of Buddhism. However, the first steps in organizing Buddhist groups and associations, did not take place until the early 1970s. The interest in Zen and Tibetan Buddhism led to the establishment of organizations devoted to these forms of Buddhism in 1972 and 1975 respectively. The establishment of the Buddhist Federation of Norway (BFN) in 1979 was the result of a joint initiative by these two organizations. The law encouraged Norwegian Buddhists to register as a religious community in order to receive the support of the state, as the Act relating to Religious Communities, passed by the Norwegian parliament in 1969, provided for regular government funding of registered religious communities of all faiths, based on the principle of equal per capita support to that given to the established of Norway.

Vietnamese Buddhist Activist to Visit Korea
Renowned Vietnamese Zen master and human rights activist Thich Nhat Hanh, 76, will visit South Korea on March 16 for 20 days.
Often referred to as the most beloved Buddhist teacher in the West, Nhat Hanh will be here at the invitation of the Korea Environment Foundation and Myong-jin Publishing Incorporation, which published his best-selling essay ``Anger.¡¯¡¯
Nhat Hanh was born in central Vietnam in 1926 and joined the Buddhist order at the age of 16. In Saigon in the early 1960s he founded the School of Youth for Social Services (SYSS), a grass-roots relief organization that rebuilt bombed villages, set up schools and medical centers, resettled homeless families and organized agricultural cooperatives.
Rallying some 10,000 student volunteers, the SYSS based its work on the Buddhist principles of non-violence and compassionate action. Despite government denunciation of his activity, Nhat Hanh also founded a Buddhist university, publishing house and an influential peace activist magazine in Vietnam.
Exiled from Vietnam, he traveled to the U.S. where he made the case for peace during the Vietnam War to federal and Pentagon officials, including Robert McNamara. He may have changed the course of U.S. history when he persuaded Martin Luther King, Jr. to oppose the war publicly, and so helped galvanize the peace movement. The following year King nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

    Self Immolation
This Article acquired from http://urbandharma.org http://www.abc.net.au/ra/newstories/RANewsStories_860846.htm Vietnam has marked the 40th anniversary of the self-immolation of Thich Quang Duc. The monk's protest came to symbolise the repression of the US-backed South Vietnamese regime against Buddhism. The Executive Council of the Vietnamese Buddhist Church and local government officials in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, attended the memorial service at the An Quang Pagoda. On June 11, 1963, Duc, a 67-year-old monk from the Linh-Mu Pagoda in Hue, burned himself to death at a busy intersection in Saigon.
The Self-Immolation of a Buddhist Monk http://www.uwec.edu/greider/BMRB/culture/student.work/hicksr/#Who%20Was%20Thich%20Quang%20Duc On June 11, 1963, Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk from the Linh-Mu Pagoda in Hue, Vietnam, burned himself to death at a busy intersection in downtown Saigon, Vietnam.. Eye witness accounts state that Thich Quang Duc and at least two fellow monks arrived at the intersection by car, Thich Quang Duc got out of the car, assumed the traditional lotus position and the accompanying monks helped him pour gasoline over himself. He ignited the gasoline by lighting a match and burned to death in a matter of minutes. David Halberstam, a reporter for the New York Times covering the war in Vietnam, gave the following account:
