Included here are major interests and aspects of my life, with pages about my environmental awareness, being a near-vegan vegetarian, watching my diet, education and work experience (such as that found on my resume), my favorites (including web sites), personal notes of all sorts, and contacting information. I am a Ph.D. Chemical Engineer with a Certificate in Computer Science obtained years later than my doctorate. In addition to these, I have taken a variety of courses from different types of institutions over the years. After receiving my Ph.D., I worked over 7 years in Research and Development for the government, a large corporation, and a moderately-size company. After receiving my CS Certificate from Handisoft, I taught almost the entire CS curriculum there. My daily activities include being an Adjunct Professor at the college level, watching my diet (as a near-vegan vegetarian), exercising (until recently), going online and checking my Email, doing my own cooking, and putting my environmental concerns into practice.

CHRISTIANITY AND VEGETARIANISM:
SOME THOUGHTS... Compiled by David Ogilvie Animals are God's creatures, not human property, nor utilities, nor resources, nor commodities, but precious beings in God's sight. ... Christians whose eyes are fixed on the awfulness of crucifixion are in a special position to understand the awfulness of innocent suffering. The Cross of Christ is God's absolute identification with the weak, the powerless, and the vulnerable, but most of all with unprotected, undefended, innocent suffering.
- Rev. Andrew Linzey, Professor of Theology, Oxford University
(For more information about Rev. Andrew Linzey's writings, please refer to the Further Reading
section below.) Many Christians seem to turn a blind eye to the suffering of animals that is inflicted by humans. Sure, they are generally kind and caring people, who may love their dog or cat, but they do not seem to be at all concerned about the plight of the pigs, chickens, sheep and cows that they themselves eat. I find it difficult to understand this, why these Christians, who generally consider themselves to be compassionate and caring people, are not concerned about the suffering of these animals. That these people who teach about a loving, compassionate, merciful God, contribute to so much unnecessary misery and suffering in their own lives.

    130. Least Harm: A Defense Of Vegetarianism From Steven Davis’s Omnivorous Proposal

Least harm: a defense of vegetarianism from Steven Davis’s omnivorous proposal Gaverick Matheny Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics PDF from journal available here: http://courses.ats.rochester.edu/nobis/papers/least-harm.pdf Download this instead of what’s below! Abstract In his article, “Least Harm,” Steven Davis argues that the number of animals killed in ruminant-pasture production is less than the number of animals killed in crop production. Davis then concludes the adoption of an omnivorous diet would cause less harm than the adoption of a vegetarian diet. Davis ’s argument fails on three counts: first, Davis makes a mathematical error in using total rather than per capita estimates of animals killed; second, he focuses on the number of animals killed in production and ignores the welfare of these animals; and third, he does not count the number of animals who may be prevented from existing. When we correct these errors, Davis ’s argument makes a strong case for, rather than against, adopting a vegetarian diet: vegetarianism kills fewer animals, involves better treatment of animals, and likely allows a greater number of animals with lives worth living to exist. Keywords: animal production, animal rights, animal welfare, least harm, vegetarianism, utilitarianism, population

Lacto-vegetarian: Diet consists of plant foods plus some or all dairy products. Lacto-ovovegetarian: Diet consists of plant foods, milk, dairy products and eggs. Semi or Partial Vegetarian: Doesn't eat red meat, but may eat chicken or fish with plant foods, dairy products, and eggs. There are many variations.

Alternative Names: Lacto-ovovegetarian; Semi-vegetarian; Partial vegetarian; Vegan; Lacto-vegetarian
Function: The diet may be adopted for a variety of reasons, including religious or political beliefs, economics, or the desire to consume a more healthful diet.
The American Dietetic Association states that a well-planned vegetarian diet can be consistent with good nutritional intake. Dietary recommendations vary with the type of vegetarian diet. For children and adolescents these diets require special planning, because it may be difficult to obtain all the nutrients required for growth and development. Nutrients that may be lacking in a vegetarian's diet are

Vegetarianism is a common dietary habit that requires partially or completely eliminating animal products. Religion, animal welfare and personal beliefs are some reasons why people may choose to follow a plant-based diet. When properly planned and followed, some vegetarian diets have been shown to help reduce cholesterol, body weight, hypertension, constipation, as well as decrease the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and gallbladder disorders. However, the term vegetarian is sometimes confusing, loosely used and left for individual interpretation. It's also important to note that when individuals follow plant-based diets that are extremely restrictive and not well rounded, this can lead to nutritional deficiencies. Knowing the different vegetarian diets and the possible nutrient deficiencies can help people make smart choices related to following a plant-based diet. The following are common definitions used to qualify vegetarian dietary habits:
    • Vegan - only plant products
    • Lacto vegetarian - plant products, milk and milk products

Hare Krishna Movement People are generally unaware of the importance of cows. Cows produce, in large quantities, the miracle food, milk. Milk is produced from the blood of the cow, however she is happy to give her blood transformed in a peaceful, non-violent way in the form of milk. The cow is so merciful she is freely giving us her milk which contains all the vitamins, proteins and other nutrients found in flesh. If people drink milk there is absolutely no need for animal killing and no possibility of their diets being deficient in any way. One can survive simply by drinking milk. Milk is a complete food.
As devotees of Krishna, we have a special interest in protecting cows because Krishna is a cowheard boy. It seems amazing... How could God be a cowheard boy? But sometimes truth is stranger than fiction... Krishna likes the cows very much. Therefore, because Krishna is very friendly towards the cows, killing cows is more sinful than killing other animals. Any unnecessary killing is sinful so naturally we are vegetarians. But we are more

Except for a couple of trips through Asia ( Tibet China Silk Road , and Japan ) I've done a pretty good job of avoiding the intake of meat since 1987. And, besides the obvious health benefits, there are compelling economic, ethical, environmental, and moral reasons for you to become a vegetarian, or even vegan as well:
  • The way we humans treat animals, in general, is downright inhumane . Caging them, feeding them drugs, depriving them of their mates, community, offspring and natural way of life is wrong and we know better. And, of course, slaughtering innocent animals is so greuesome that no expense is barred in hiding it from the general public. Raising animals for meat consumption is energy and resource intensive - the world's hungry could be cared for on a vegetarian diet. Meat is expensive - this is because it takes a lot of water and energy to raise, transport, preserve, and serve it. Landscapes, lakes and ocean floors are

    Why not eat meat?
      Health Reasons:
You'll be healthier without meat, and you'll live longer! An average American male meat eater has 50 percent chance of dying of a heart attack, compared to a four percent chance of a vegetarian suffering the same fate. A woman who eats meat daily is four times more at risk for breast cancer than a woman who eats meat once a week. The overloaded fat and protein content of meat and dairy products is also linked to other cancers, obesity, and stroke. Vegetable protein is just as good as animal protein for strength, and current studies show that too much protein intake is linked to diabetes, cancer, and osteoporosis. Every nutrient we need is easily obtained from plant sources.
      Environmental Reasons:
Today's factory farms use everything, but in the process they leave behind an environmental toll that generations to come will be forced to pay. Raising animals for food requires more that half the water used in the United States each year and one-third of all raw materials, including fossil fuels. This industry is the greatest polluter of our waters and is directly responsible for 85 percent of soil erosion. Our country's meat addiction is steadily poisoning and depleting our land, water and air. To learn more about environmental concerns,

Why should a Hindu not eat beef? Of course, Hindus see 33 crore Gods in it. For that matter, they see God in all entities of the world. Weren't it we who said, "Eeshavasya midam sarvam..."? )
To go to the details of it we may have to go into the Vedic Vishwa. Basically vedas refer "Gou" as animal and as well as "Indriya"(senses). The word "Gou" over the period of time became "Cow" in English(Apabhransh). In Vedic peroid some yajnas were practiced
    • AshwaMedh
    • GouMedh
    • AjaMedh The real meaning of each of these word Vedic people knew. Over the period they(words) lost meanings and people considered Ashwamedh = to sacrifice Ashwa(Ghoda) GouMedh = to sacrifice Gou(Gaya) AjaMedh = to sacrifice Aja(Bakara) . This wrong interpretations of these words resulted in heavy sacrifices of Gou and Aja (Bakara).
