Where To Find Reliable Food Composition Data
Question: Where can I get reliable information about vitamins and minerals in food in light of recently reported inaccuracies in the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) food composition data? S.K., VA Answer: An October, 1993, report from the General Accounting Office questioned the reliability of the Human Nutrition Information Service's (HNIS) nutrient values. HNIS is an agency within USDA whose functions include the development of tables and computer databases of food composition information. Readers may have heard of Handbook 8 or Handbook 72; both are HNIS publications. Tables such as these are used to determine what Americans are eating (how much fat, vitamin C, iron, etc.) and to make policy decisions. They are considered to be the world's main source of nutrient information. Most computer nutrient analysis programs, tables, and popular books rely on HNIS data as the foundation for their nutrient information. HNIS gets most of the data it publishes from the food industry and from scientific journals. They were faulted for accepting data without knowing that proper procedures were used for analysis. In some cases not enough samples were analyzed, given the variability of nutrient content of foods.

The Myths of Vegetarianism
by Stephen Byrnes, ND, PhD, RNCP "An unflinching determination to take the whole evidence into account is the only method of preservation against the fluctuating extremes of fashionable opinion" Alfred North Whitehead Bill and Tanya sat before me in my office in a sombre mood: they had just lost their first baby in the second month of pregnancy. Tanya was particularly upset: "Why did this happen to me? Why did I miscarry my baby?" The young couple had come to see me mostly because of Tanya's recurrent respiratory infections, but also wanted some advice as to how they could avoid the heartache of another failed pregnancy. Upon questioning Tanya about her diet, I quickly saw the cause of her infections, as well as her miscarriage: she had virtually no fat in her diet and was also mostly a vegetarian. Because of the plentiful media rhetoric about the supposed dangers of animal product consumption, as opposed to the supposed health benefits of the vegetarian lifestyle, Tanya had deliberately removed such things as cream, butter, meats and fish from her diet. Although she liked liver, she avoided it due to worries over "toxins."

Chinese Vegetarianism: Buddhist Roots
Following The Path If you want to lead them to the Buddha's wisdom,
first you ought to give them something good to eat!
- the commentary of Tripitaka Master Hua on The Sixth Patriarch's Dharma Jewel Platform Sutra Although, in the minds of many, vegetarianism is commonly associated with Buddhism, the link is far from absolute. Of the two major lines of Buddhist practice, Northern School (often called Mahayana and chiefly in India, Tibet, China, Korea, and Japan) and the Southern School (often called Hinayana and practiced in Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka), only Northern School scriptures expressly forbid the eating of flesh. Also, vegetarianism is not a standard practice in Tantric Buddhism, which includes Vajrayana Buddhism practised by Tibetans (e.g., H.H. the Dalai Lama does not practice vegetarianism). The new emphasis on Buddhist vegetarianism arose in 3rd century India under the Gupta kings, who were worshippers of the Hindu deity Vishnu. Ascetics following Vishnu were required to abstain from animal food of any kind. Thus, Buddhist scriptures of that time presented a sort of 'moral parity' argument: if those on a lesser path forbid meat, shouldn't we? When the Chinese Fa-hsien visited India early in the 5th century, he found that in the whole of the Middle Country

The word vegetarian, coined by the founders of the British Vegetarian Society in 1842, comes from the Latin word vegetus, meaning "whole, sound, fresh, or lively," as in homo vegetus-a mentally and physically vigorous person. The original meaning of the word implies a balanced philosophical and moral sense of life, a lot more than just a diet of vegetables and fruits. Christmas is fast approaching and those of us used to celebrating the occasion with the usual Yuletide orgy of eating and drinking will probably be busy at the moment stocking up on all the essentials. But what if turkey, ham, or smoked goose are not up your street? A sizeable proportion of those sitting down to dinner in ten days will be pouring cranberry sauce over dishes like almond and apricot nut-loaf or roasted chestnut roulade. Blasphemy? No. it's called vegetarianism; and the country with the highest concentration of non-meat eaters has got to be India.

VEGETARIANISM IN INDIA T hough no country in the world is as strongly associated with vegetarianism as India, a number of recent studies have purported to establish that by far the greater majority of Indians are non-vegetarians. The history of vegetarianism in India begins not with the Aryans, as is commonly believed by Hindus, but in the aftermath of the introduction of Buddhism and Jainism in the sixth century BCE. Though orthodox Hindus are shocked to hear it, the early Aryans were almost certainly beef-eaters. Unlike the Indus Valley people, who were agriculturists and traders, the Aryans were a pastoral people, and they slaughtered cattle as food. Neither the early Indus Valley people nor the early Aryans venerated the cow. Though the Buddha was an exponent of ahimsa , or non-violence, he was not himself a vegetarian, and it is said that his last meal contained pork. Nonetheless, given the Buddhist emphasis on ahimsa ahimsa much further, and it is the complete reverence for all forms of life that made it impossible for those who embraced Jainism to practice agriculture. The upper castes, who found members of their community deserting the "Hindu" fold for Buddhism or Jainism, increasingly came to adopt vegetarianism.

Stop Starvation: Kill Wild Animals
PETA and the vegans like to tell us that animals are what cause our starvation problems. On the PETA website you can find the following text:
Every day, 840 million people around the world, including 200 million children, go hungry. Raising animals for food is much less efficient than growing vegetables, grain, or beans.
They are saying we should not raise animals because of the environmental impact they have. Lets look at the environmental impact that wild animals have, and how killing them can help end starvation. Wildlife causes $1.6 billion annually to agriculture. That $1.6 billion in crops would go a long way toward helping the world's starving. By killing these wild animals, not only would we prevent the huge crop losses from happening, we could use these wild animals to help feed the starving as well.
Every year hunters, with the help of organizations like Hunters For The Hungry , donate millions of pounds of wild game to help feed the homeless and less fortunate. This is a win win situation. The animals are destroyed so the damage done to the crops is reduced, and they can be fed to people in need. Hunting and killing wild animals clearly makes sense if you are truly concerned about the environment and the homeless that might not get a meal otherwise.

The most healthful, the pure vegetarian (or "vegan") diet, only includes foods of plant origin, such as nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, grains, and legumes. A "lacto-vegetarian" includes these plant foods and also dairy products. A "lacto-ovo-vegetarian" consumes both dairy and eggs. Is Veg Healthier?

Others see it, on ethical grounds, as cruel to animals. Religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism have such prohibitions and the early Greek Pythagorean systems also had purification taboos on eating some meats. Buddhism tends to vegetarianism and in some more extreme levels to veganism, which is an absolutist form of vegetarianism, which abstains from even the produce of animals such as milk, cheese and eggs. The idea was developed, in stages, not only in Ancient India but also in Egypt. Buddhist concepts were introduced to Greece by Pyrrho of Elis (c. 4th Century BCE) (Burnet, article

Vegeterianism in India - Indian recipes vegetarian Vegetarianism, History of Vegetarianism in India, benefits of Vegetarianism, Health benefits of vegetarianism Indian recipes , Indian cuisine dishes, Indian food Vegetarian, the belief in and practice of eating exclusively vegetable foods and abstaining from any form of animal food. Food plays a major role and forms the essence in the practice of Religion in India. During the ancient Aryan Vedic period meat was consumed after animal sacrifice to the Gods. This slowly changed with the rise of Jainism and Buddhisim, since their founders advocated the principle of ahimsa or ''non-violence''. The Brahman priests, who used to exploit the people and advocated animal sacrifices as offerings in the name of religion, also began to preach Vegeterianism since it gained much popularity in India. They began to embrace Vegeterianism by following a vegetarian diet themselves. However due to this constant exploitation of the people, these Brahmin priests soon began losing their status and respect in the society, which once placed them in the highest strata. By 1908 vegetarianism had becom e an organized global movement gaining popularity when the International Vegetarian Union was founded in Germany.
