Going Veggie: A Beginner's Guide The Animal Protection Institute (API)'s Vegetarian Starter Kit is designed to help you make daily food choices that can dramatically improve the lives of billions of farm animals, halt the destruction of the environment, and improve your health. In addition to producing this Vegetarian Starter Kit, API educates the public about the benefits of plant-based diets and the cruelty of factory farming through billboards, newspaper advertisements, the Internet, editorials to newspapers, and outreach events. All animals, including humans, have the ability to experience pleasure and pain. Regrettably, humans have inflicted tremendous amounts of pain and suffering on animals without any consideration of how the animals are affected. By choosing a plant-based diet, you can help end widespread animal abuse and exploitation one meal at time.

84. Vegetarianism
Some people define vegetarianism loosely. They may say they are almost vegetarians But here s what studies have shown about vegetarianism and health

People become vegetarians for many reasons. These may include religious reasons (Hindu, Moslem, Buddist, Seventh Day Adventist), health, fad, economic, or moral [against the killing of animals] reasons. Just as people are vegetarians for different reasons, the diets of vegetarians are not all the same. With careful planning, a vegetarian diet can be healthy, no matter which type of vegetarian diet you choose. Let's first define a vegetarian diet. Some people define vegetarianism loosely. They may say they are "almost" vegetarians because they don't eat red meat (but they do eat poultry and fish). However, a true vegetarian is a person who eats no meat. There are two basic kinds:
    1. lacto (milk) - ovo (egg) vegetarians:
They don't eat any meat, but do eat eggs, milk, and other dairy products such as cheese, butter, and yogurt. Some people are just lacto vegetarians; they eat dairy products, but not eggs. Some are ovo vegetarians; they eat eggs, but no other animal foods. 2. vegan: They do not eat any animal products. In some cases, this includes avoiding honey.

Veal Vegetarianism is a dietary practice excluding all body parts of any animal and products derived from animals (e.g., lard, tallow, gelatin, cochineal) from one's diet. Many contemporary vegetarian diets include some honey as well as milk and other dairy products, and some include eggs. Varieties of Vegetarianism Different practices of vegetarianism include:
  • Strict vegetarians avoid consuming all animal products (e.g., eggs, milk, cheese and honey). Today, strict vegetarians are commonly called vegans, though some reserve this term for those who additionally avoid usage of all kinds of animal products (e.g., leather and some cosmetics), not just food.
  • Ovo-lacto vegetarians do not eat meat, but may consume animal products such as eggs and milk. Those who are ovo-lacto vegetarians for ethical reasons may additionally refuse to eat cheese made with animal-based enzymes (rennet), or eggs produced by factory farms. The term "vegetarian" is most commonly intended to mean "ovo-lacto vegetarian", particularly as "vegan" has gained acceptance as the term for stricter practice.

When I look out into the world, I see the forces that would bring us disaster. I see the deep night of unthinkable cruelty and blindness. But I also look within the human heart and find something of love there, something that cares and shines out into the dark universe like a bright beacon. And in the shining of that light, I feel the dreams and prayers of all beings. In the shining of that beacon I feel all of our hopes for a better future, and the strength to do what we are here to do. May all be fed. May all be healed. May all be loved. John Robins

The Conviction and Practice of Compassionate Living And God said, "Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is a living soul, I have given every green herb for food: and it was so." ~God, Genesis 1:29-30 The Diet Ordained by God
    • What is Veganism? Simply stated, veganism is the conviction and practice of compassionate living. Veganism is a way of living which excludes all forms of exploitation and cruelty to the animal kingdom and includes a reverence for life. Body of Evidence Cardiologist Dr. William C. Roberts says without hesitation: "Humans aren’t physiologically designed to eat meat." The Protein Myth High protein animal flesh diets are unhealthy. Adequate amounts of protein to maintain body tissues, including muscle, are important and can be easily achieved on a vegetarian diet.

Nutritional pros and cons of Meat-based and Vegetarian Diets
Most individuals who have switched to a vegetarian lifestyle at some point in their lives (who weren't
born into it), have done so following some form of perceived enlightenment, or after the realization that
consuming animal products is either anti-religious, anti-earth (to save the planet), against animal rights,
or that it is simply unhealthy.  I have been testing and treating a large number of vegetarian patients over
more than two decades, so I'm presenting arguments for and against the consumption of animal-based
products from a health -point of view.
Contrary to vegan-based reviews or commentaries, people following a strict vegetarian diet are not
healthier than their omnivorous counterparts.  In fact, on average , they suffer from as many, or more
medical complaints as compared to non-vegetarian individuals, who include meat or eggs in their diet. There is absolutely no question that the average person does best health-wise by consuming a mixed diet that is as fresh, and hopefully as unprocessed as possible.  Beyond that, an individual assessment

Discusses karmic reasons for eating vegetarian food.
    http://www.ivu.org/religion/articles/karma.html
International Vegetarian Union (IVU) Religion and Vegetarianism
Thakar Singh on the Karma of Vegetarianism
Many look upon Thakar Singh of Delhi, India, as a spiritual adept, a holy man, or a master. He was asked by one of his students in an interview on June 29, 1994, in Kinderhook, New York, USA, about the vegetarian diet. He talks about karmic reasons for eating vegetarian food. Question : Master, we all know that it's very crucial to abstain from the eating of meat because this increases our karmas, but can you explain in more detail the reasons for becoming vegetarian? Thakar Singh: We are not to increase our burden of karmas, as you have already said. There is value in every kind of thing we use in this world. The air we use, we have to pay for. The water we use, we have to pay for. The light of sun or moon is also not free for us, and this green grass is also to be paid fornothing is free. If you are to make a house, you don't make it of gold or silver or jewels. That will still be just a house, nothing very special. If you can make the house of stoneit is very easy and very inexpensivethen why don't you make the house of stone and brick instead of gold? In the same way, if we can maintain our life very simply, with the lower cost of this greenery, then why should we attract so much burden and payment of karma? Life goes on in the creeping worms but there is great difference of payment of life. We are not allowed to use anything that creeps on the earth. We are only allowed to have the fruit of the trees and whatever is grown on the table of this earth, that God had been wise enough to guide us and tell us what is most useful so that we can maintain our life with the least burden.
