The Divya Prabandham
The Divya Prabandham is the collective corpus of the passionate hymns of the Alvar mystics (5th-8th centuries A.D.). It was the scholar-saint Nathamuni who, in the 10th century, retrieved and compiled this bhakti treasure which is the pride of Tamil classical literature. The Sri Vaishnava guru parampara (inheritance order of the preceptors) is held to commence from Lord Sri Narayana himself, and to centre, rightly so, around Sri Nathamuni and his grandson Sri Yamuna. The Alvars represented all the caste-groups of the society and their works enjoy the status of "dravida" or Tamil Veda, on par with the "girvaana" Veda in pre-Panini Sanskrit. The Divya Prabandham is in the form of adoration of the deities of 108 temples (divya desams) situated in different parts of the country, and employs every form of poetics (aNi) and prosody (chandam) available in Tamil. The version presented here was typed in by a small group of volunteers in 1994. To download the entire collection of poems, click here for the DOS version (zipped) or here for the Unix version (tarred and gzipped).

Branches
Major Vaishnava schools of thought:
There are a lot of disagreements over who exactly is Vaishnava. There are basically two sides to this party. 1.Group which believes that Vishnu is the Greatest God and all other Gods and creatures are below him.All the sects mentioned above excepting the last fall under this Group. 2.The Group which believes that as no soul is actually created, every soul is ultimately one and the same.Hence each soul could be considered as equally divine. Thus Vishnu in the Saguna form ,is one whom in which all attributes are in harmony and perfection. As a nirguna,he becomes the state unblemished by matter and is attributeless.

Six Gosvamis
Caitanya Mahaprabhu requested a select few among his followers, who later came to be known as the Six Gosvamis of Vrindavan , to systematically present his theology of bhakti in their writings. This theology emphasized the devotee's relationship to the Divine Couple, Radha and Krishna , and looked to Caitanya as the embodiment of both Radha and Krishna. Kheturi
The famous festival of Kheturi , presided over by Jahnava Thakurani , the wife of Nityananda Prabhu, was the first time the leaders of the various branches of Caitanya's followers assembled together. Through such festivals, members of the loosely organized tradition became acquainted with other branches along with their respective theological and practical nuances. That notwithstanding, the tradition has maintained its plural nature, having no central authority to preside over its matters. The festival of Kheturi allowed for the systemitization of Gaudiya Vaishnava Theology as a distinct branch of

  • Samasrayanam
  • AdheyatvA (i.e. being supported by a sarIrI): Existence of the sarIrA(body) is due to the sarIrI i.e. sarIrI supports the sarIrA. In other words, if sarIrI ceases to exist, sarIrA also ceases to exist.
  • niyamyatvA (i.e. being controlled by a sarIrI): Not only that sarIrA derives its existence from a sarIrI, it is also being controlled by the sarIrI. So, sarIrA acts as per the will/desires of sarIrI.
  • seshatvA It is to be noted that the "sarIrI" needn't be physically present inside a "sarIrA". This is not a condition to be met out for the sarIra-sarIrI bhAvA to hold good. sAstrAs declare that Bhakti and prapatti are the only two means (sAdhya upAyAs) by which the baddha jIvAtmAs can attain moksham, while the Divya Dampati are the Siddha upAyam. NArAyaNA Himself, in Ahirbudhnya samhitA categorically declares: "bhaktyA paramayA vA-pi prapattyA vA mahAmathe

The seven general pre-requisites for Bhakti YogA are:
